I live in Florida and I am setting up a new computer for freinds that are visiting from PA. They are not very computer savy so I need to be sure that everything is working before they go home. I have Brighthouse as my service provider and they have Verizon DSL at home. Will I be able to set up their Verizon Email account in Windows Live Email and test it using the Brighthouse service at my home. Thanks
Should not be a problem, as long as your friends know the name of the incoming email server they use on the Verizon Network. Typically it is incoming.verizon.net, but you should have them check their email client's settings to make sure, and make sure they know their password for the Verizon email account.
YOu will need to know the name of the incoming mail server on the Verizon network in order to set up either a POP3 client for your friends, or enable windows live email to get their mail off the Verizon network.
Sending email shouldn't be a problem if they use windows live email. If they use a POP3 client such as Outlook, Outlook Express or Eudora, it may get messy. Many Internet Service Providers block off network access to port 25, so it is very likely that attempts to send mail via the Verizon SMTP (outgoing) server will be blocked.
The fix for that problem is to set up the POP3 client (if you use a POP3 client) with the same outgoing or SMTP server you use on the Brighthouse network. You should be able to determine that by looking at the account settings in your email program. Depending upon the network, you may need to provide a password for authentication for the Brighthouse SMTP server.
Alternatively, you can keep their Verizon outgoing server set up and use port 587 instead of 25. That way they should be able to use it on any network they connect to. 🙂
