Email access fails authentication

I have recently set up email on Verizon and it works fine through the webmail browser interface. It does not authenticat the password from any mail client (Apple Mail, iPhone, iPad, Thunderbird on Windows) constantly requiring the password, which never authenticates. I spent hours with Verizon support and they are unable to get it to work. All the information is entered correctly (many, many times!) but to no avail. Anybody have any ideas?

  1. Launch AppleMail. The Welcome to Mail screen appears.
  2. Fill in each field:
    1. Your Name
    2. Email Address (format is username@verizon.net).
    3. Incoming Mail Server field, type pop.verizon.net
    4. Mail Server Type: Click POP.
    5. User Name
    6. Password
    7. Outgoing Mail Server field, type smtp.verizon.net.
    8. Click OK.
  3. From the menu bar at the top of your screen, click Mail.
  4. Click Preferences.
  5. When the Accounts window appears, from the Description box, highlight your email account and click Edit.
  6. From the Account Information tab, in the Outgoing Mail Server list box, verify thatsmtp.verizon.net is selected.
  7. Click Options.
  8. From the SMTP Server Options window, in the Authentication list box, choose Password.
  9. In the User name and Password fields, type your user name and password.
  10. Click OK.

I ensure the port for pop.verizon.net is 995, with SSL and password authentication and smtp.verizon.ne is port 465 with SSL and password. As i said, it's the same in Windows and my mobile devices and the result is the same.

Sounds like you have an account issue, not a settings issue. You will probably have to contact tech support and get them to put in a ticket to the "OSC" for investigation.

Make sure the password is using clear/normal text.  Spa, APOP, etc don't work.

Many versions of APPLE require a complete shutdown and restart of the computer/device.

Check some of the threads on Thunderbird, where people, including me, posted screen shots of the settings.

Apple devices will automaticlly configure with the correct setting for pop and smtp servers for verizon when setting up a new account.  I assume you are not a Yahoo portal partner. If your email page says yahoo when you log in then you are a portal partner and your setting are a little different.

If you can log  in it verifies you have the correct username and password.

Thank you, I've tried with restart with no success on any of the devices (iMac, iPhone, iPad). The password is always in cleartext  - never tried the other options. I'll take a further look thhrough the threads, but I'm not sure I'll find anything I haven't tried yet. The attempt with Thunderbird was a fresh install on a Windows XP laptop and the authentication failed with the same password error.

I'm not a Yahoo! user, but I do have Gmail. Would the slightly different settings be appropriate for Gmail as wel? If so, what are they?

GMAIL?  Configuring GMAIL to VERIZON?  or some sort of VERIZON GMAIL interface?

No, I do not use Gmail to access my Verizon account. I was juat stating I have a Gmail account in case there is some consideration as was implied for Yahoo! accounts. So far, nothing has worked and no one at Verizon is able to solve the problem. It has nothing to do with Apple products since it does not work on any email client I have tried on Windows either. The problem is in Verizon somewhere. Every email client worked fine until we changed the user name associated with the account. Since that change we have been unable to get anything but the webmail to work. All other clients fail with an message stating the password is incorrect or can't connect to the account, enter password.

In what way was the username changed? Generally speaking, it's not possible for a user to change their username. A new account can be created, or the alias can be changed, but a username is set permanantly. Did Verizon do a "scrub" or a "repoint" on your account to change it?

It's worth noting that aliases often don't work for authentication, so if you are, in fact, talking about an alias and not a username, that might be the issue.

She said they did a scrub. They changed the user name from "abc.xyz" to "axyz".  axyz was on an old account and all the old information was resored (and is there!) Everything works except only from the webmail interface.
