After annoying periodic problems with signing in (even after getting Verizon tech support) I found I could most reliably get into my email by signing in to my verizon account and then going to email.
The best solution however was to make my gmail account my primary one so I only have to visit my Verizon email occasionally. I do recommend that latter action as gmail is good and reliable and Verizon clearly can't correct the problem (obvious as it is several years old at this point).
