Legitimate Verizon addresses being blocked as Unknown or Illegal alias

Dear Verizon Support,

We have been advised by our non-profit clients that many valid verizon.net members have had their addresses blocked.

After review, it appears that we intermittently receive a 500 SMTP Response that the address is not valid.

Example:

{edited for privacy}@verizon.net

Bounced:

b,2014-10-24 15:27:39-0500

b,2014-10-20 22:41:23-0500

Delivered:

d,2014-10-14 16:24:24-0500

d,2014-10-07 16:57:53-0500

d,2014-10-20 02:15:47-0500

Verizon Server: relay.verizon.net (206.46.232.11)

You'll see that sometimes the delivery attempts bounce and sometimes they do not.  When these messages bounced, we received:

"550 5.1.1 unknown or illegal alias: {edited for privacy}@verizon.net".

Another example is:

{edited for privacy}@verizon.net

Bounced:

b,2014-10-20 22:34:48-0500

b,2014-10-24 15:26:02-0500

b,2014-10-24 15:15:59-0500

Delivered:

d,2014-10-14 16:25:04-0500

d,2014-10-07 16:35:17-0500

Bounce Code & Reason:

"550 5.1.1 unknown or illegal alias: {edited for privacy}@verizon.net"

We've had a tremendous amount of valid users permanently bounced due to these bounce responses that indicate the user addresses are not valid when they are in fact valid.  I've seen this occur in Sept through October, and fear it's still on-going.

Can you please advise if there was a Verizon problem accepting mails to valid Verizon users and for how long this has occurred, as well as if this is still on-going?

Hi cwong,

Your issue has been escalated to a Verizon agent. Before the agent can begin assisting you, they will need to collect further information from you. Please go to your profile page for the forum and look at the top of the middle column where you will find an area titled "My Support Cases". You can reach your profile page by clicking on your name beside your post, or at the top left of this page underneath the title of the board.

Under "My Support Cases" you will find a link to the private board where you and the agent may exchange information. The title of your post is the link. This should be checked on a frequent basis, as the agent may be waiting for information from you before they can proceed with any actions. To ensure you know when they have responded to you, at the top of your support case there is a drop down menu for support case options. Open that and choose "subscribe". Please keep all correspondence regarding your issue in the private support portal.
