My settings box does not have a "server requires authentication" - it just has "connection security" and "authentication method." When I set connection security to none, it automatically fills in the method with "password - transmitted insecurely." I do use port 587 for outgoing, though.

That is 100% correct. The info I gave above is just the general pop3 settings. The exact settings vary from program to program, and I'm not always able to access the specific program to get details. Good info!

Ah, ok, I was a bit concerned there for a moment - but I should have realized porgram specific variability!

Perhaps you can tell me - is it a problem that the password is transmitted insecurely? If I try using SSL, it stop working. The only thing that works is the connection security = none.

Thanks so much!

I don't think Verizon uses login security methods. Certainly none of my other 3 services require it (or even can use it). And my Roadrunner/Brighthouse account doesn't even require authentication to send mail.

That depends entirely on who you ask. Does it make your information more vulnerable should someone decide to come after it? Yes.

Verizon doesn't support any secured authentication methods though, so it's insecure or webmail.

Ah, ok, so it is not something I have control over anyway.  I will just continue to employ all theother security measures that I can.

Thanks so much! And, GaryDoug, thanks to you to - I gave you both kudos!
