New outgoing 465 port not working in my Windows 7 / Thunderbird OR Samsung Galaxy S4

I've gone through these threads for answers and none worked. I have the latest Mozilla Thunderbird on my windows 7 machine, and a new Samsung Galaxy S4.  I have multible Verizon email accounts... one main one and several sub accounts.  I've changed to the new settings and they work for incoming, but not for outgoing.  The setup for outgoing...

Server Name: smtp.verizon.net

Port:  465

User Name:  "same as usual" (I even tried with and without the "@verizon.net" append just in case)

Connection Security:  SSL/TLS

Authentication Method:  Normal Password (also tried "no authentication")

It makes no difference if I reboot my computer or phone.  I have not deleated my old account and then created a new account for fear of losing valuable emails.

If I go back to the old settings it works fine.

Any thoughts or help would be appreciated. Thanks.

In addition, I cleaned my system and registry on my computer to eliminate temp files and old settings... still won't send outgoing email.

Here is the error report I get...

Sending of message failed.
The message could not be sent because the connection to SMTP server smtp.verizon.net timed out. Try again or contact your network administrator.

Thanks for the reply.

Here are the old settings that work...

Server Name: outgoing.verizon.net

Port:  587

User Name:  "same as usual"

Connection Security:  none

Authentication Method:  Normal Password

I am not a Yahoo portal partner.

Do you have Security software set to scan your outgoing mail? That could be causing a timeout.

I set my email to the settings as described by verizon.  It did not work. Went back to the old settings and it worked fine.  I don't understand what verizon is trying to do.  They send me email after email telling me to get rid of incoming.verizon.net and replace with pop.verizon.net.  However, the settings they describe do not work.  I went to the online chat for customer support and allowed "Alex" access to my desktop.  Don't know exactly what he did, but email stopped working altogether (would keep switching to working offline).  Then told me I needed to contact microsoft because Windows Live was faulty.  Well, it worked fine until he messed with it.  I played around with it a bit after my "session" and re-input the old settings.  Works fine again.

Is it really necessary to switch to the new settings?  I foresee a huge problem if that becomes mandatory.  People will lose access to their emails by the boatloads.

They work fine for just about everyone using Windows 7 and Thunderbird.  Can't speak for Samsung Galaxy, but I expect it works there as well.  My PC's are windows 7 and Thunderbird is my main mail client.

Absolutely make sure you set authentication password: normal password.

What they are trying to do is replace old servers with lesser security controls with newer ones.  And yes the old ones may still work a little longer but will be gone at some future date.

Well, it's not working for me.  None of the new outgoing settings work in my system. Period.  The old ones worked fine and my outgoing email using my domain email (not Verizon) works fine on both my computer and my phone.  It seems that there are others with the same problem... some who figured out how to fix it and some that couldn't.  How many are experiencing this problem, I don't know.

But one thing seems to be clear... Verizon is ignoring the issue.  I have seen nothing from them other than repeating the mantra of "here are the settings...".  No acknowledgment of something wrong.

I wonder what will happen to everyone who have been waiting to change their settings until the last minute. What percentage of them will find it impossible to send emails, and what kind of furor will there be then?

Yes, port 465 is not working for me, either. I'm still using Win XP SP3. I'm using an email client called JBMail (no longer being developed) for sending mail. It has worked fine for many years. I would be happy to use Thunderbird for sending emails, but port 465 doesn't work in it, either. For that matter, I would be happy to use any desktop client if I could just get the new settings to work.

Port 587 for outgoing mail does not work, either.
