No lock on login page

Message 1 of 7

Do you know that little lock that shows on the bottom of the browser (Firefox) that tells me the site is secure? Why doesn't Verizon's new webmail login page have it?

My bookmark to Verizon Webmail stopped working today (it accepted my info, but failed to log me in). I figured it was because it took me to the old login page.  I found the new page (http://webmail.verizon.com/signin/Login.jsp), but there is no small lock in the lower right (on Firefox).  The old login page has it.  My other webmail accounts have it.  Why doesn't the new Verizon page have it (...and should I be concerned)?

Thanks in advance. - jim

While I agree with what Keyboards said, if you want to have the URL Starting with HTTPS - go to

https://www.verizon.net/ssowebapp/VOLPortalLogin?TARGET=https://www.verizon.net/ssowebapp/protected/EmailLoginHelper

Actually, when it goes to the authentication site it is an HTTPS address (HTTP secure) when it actually passes the login credentials for verification.  Usually happens so fast you don't notice, but if you watch the lower left of the browser window carefully you might be able to catch the HTTPS address flash by.

So, it's OK even though I don't see the little lock before I log in? If so, I find it strange that Verizon's site works that way (especially when their old site had it). I always look for the little lock before giving a site my login information.

That's the page I had bookmarked, which was not workiing this morning.  I tried three times.  It either hung up until I aborted or took me to another login screen.  That's when I switched to the new page.  But the "old" (lock) page is working again now, so I'll reset my bookmarks.  Much thanks.

You should be aware the lock icon alone is no guarantee you have a secure connection.  There is malware that exploits vulnerabilities to spoof SSL certs.  This kb has some info on additional things to look for:
