I had been getting mails. Now out of the blue I get I need to update my settings. I have canceled my account in outlook, set it up again....didn't work. I have changed passwords with Verizon and AOL but I simply can't get email without using a browser...why?

If you are using the correct settings it should work. There are even a few variations that work (TLS instead of SSL).
Remember you are talking to peeps here not Verizon Support.
