You don't need to access Yahoo webmail to fix this, just log into Yahoo.com as explained in this step-by-step procedure:

Jack, thanks for the reply. When you say "just log into Yahoo.com", how do I do that if I've never logged into it before with this Verizon email address? I tried putting the no-longer-working password from Outlook into Yahoo.com but that doesn't work. We never received any notice to reset the password. It worked fine until the middle of March, when Outlook simply stopped downloading emails. The password in Outlook was given over the phone a few years ago, when Verizon was still taking support calls.

Go to https://www.yahoo.com/ and click on the "Sign in" button on the top right side. Enter your Verizon-Yahoo e-mail address and then click on "Next". Then on the next screen, click on "Forgot password?" That will start the process to reset your password, but I don't know how you will get the new password if you cannot access your mail. I know it works if you registered a cell phone number or an alternate e-mail address with them.
My situation was a little different. I was always able to access webmail on Yahoo.com and on the Yahoo app on my phone, but it was the Thunderbird e-mail client that stopped working in mid-March. Thunderbird, Outlook. iOS and all other third-party e-mail clients now need to use a Yahoo-generated App Password.
If the password that you used on Outlook does not work on Yahoo.com, are you sure that your Verizon mail was converted to Yahoo? There were to options - to convert the Verizon accounts to Yahoo or to AOL, and I think the default was to AOL. So you could go to https://www.aol.com/ and try to log-in there with your Verizon e-mail address and your old password.

My Outlook uses "incoming.yahoo.verizon.net" and "outgoing.yahoo.verizon.net" so I suppose Yahoo is where they put our account? I double-checked all other settings, like POP3, SMTP, SPA, SSL, ports 995/465. etc. from other posts that show up with a Google search.

The POP mail settings specified by Yahoo are not "incoming.yahoo.verizon.net" and "outgoing.yahoo.verizon.net". The POP settings that work for me using Thunderbird are as specified by Yahoo here: https://help.yahoo.com/kb/pop-settings-sln4724.html
But you previously stated that you cannot log into Yahoo.com, so that has nothing to do with the server settings on Outlook, so you have nothing to lose by trying to log into AOL.com with the same log-in that works for you on Verizon.com and to access this forum.
