Hoever it is best to access at least every 90 days.
AOL, A Verizon Company, which is taking over the handling of email says "An AOL Mail account may be deactivated if it is inactive for 90 days. To keep your AOL Mail account active, please sign in to your account at least once every 90 days.
When a mailbox is deactivated after 90 days without a log in, new mail may not be delivered to your mailbox. Incoming emails are bounced back to the sender. If another 90 days pass without any activity on the account (180 days total) your mailbox may be deleted. Any saved data -- email, photos, attachments -- will also be deleted. An inactive account is likely the answer to questions like "Why do I see the welcome message in my AOL Mail account?" or "Where did my email go?" or "Why is my email missing?""
