pop.verizon.net does not respond - +HOT+

Attempts to contact pop.verizon.net fail.

 

It does not even respond to ping from within verizon.net.

Nor from  Network-Tools.com (23.21.179.138)

Nor from centralops.net(208.101.16.74)

Nor from any other hosts as per http://cloudmonitor.ca.com/en/ping.php

 

Does anyone know what's happening?

As mentioned pop.verizon.net NEVER responds to pings!.

 

Problem has gone away ! Next time I'll try   telnet pop.verizon.net 995 !

Last I heard, Verizon has ping responses turned off for the POP server to prevent DoS attacks. It's not uncommon for servers like that.

As Somegirl said probably set to not respond to pings. 

 

If setting up you must make sure to use SSL and port 995 for pop.verizon.net and similarly ssl and port 465 for smtp.verizon.net.  Both require LOGIN and PLAIN TEXT passwords.

The correct (and tested) comman is:

openssl s_client -connect pop.verizon.net:995 -quiet

 

to which the response is

 

depth=3 /C=US/O=GTE Corporation/OU=GTE CyberTrust Solutions, Inc./CN=GTE CyberTrust Global Root

verify error:num=19:self signed certificate in certificate chain

verify return:0
