I have 4 computers hooked up to my actiontec MI424wr rev e router. I need to be able to block skype on one of those computers (teen).
I have tried to block through the firewall by denying ANY UDP access in the advanced filtering section. I have also checked to see if skype is one of the software programs that can be blocked (there are several hundred, but skype is not one). I have disabled the UDP port forwarding entries skype setup, but that does not work either.
My only other option is to get on the computer itself and install a firewall there, but I'd rather be able to control it from the router. I'm willing to accept a blanket skype ban on the whole network, if I can turn it on and off.
Anyone done this?
Thanks

port blocking and IP address blocking won't work. The only way to effectively block Skype is via a packet inspection firewall that can detect the Skype signature
Looks like blocking skype at the router level is going to be a tall order. There is an E-How that you can try

Not sure if it works on the actiontec's, so you may have to install some kind of firewall or Verizon's free parental control software on that machine to block the application.
This is also a pretty good link.

Thanks, I saw the eHow article. This is not possible with the actiontec. The other option is to setup a proxy server on the network that everything has to go through. The Actiontec router does not have that capability built-in (that I can see), and I do not want to put another hardware device, or use a current computer to do this.
Verizon should have a preset for this in the actiontec router. Those presets allow for scripts to run and basically do what cisco's NBAR app does, or have a proxy built-in for this.
Unfortunately they haven't done this. Looks like I will have to get on the actual machine and block it from there. I was hoping to do it from the router, as I can access it from anywhere anytime.

while you're in there, set up team viewer on your machines, and you can remote into any machine at your home and control it.
that would help you be able to configure the actiontec, or any individual machine you install team viewer to.
