Cannot access D-Link Nas from internet.

I cannot get my Dlink 323 Network Drive to work with FTP using the Fios Actiontec ML424WR. I am trying to access from the internet using my IP plus port 21. I have talked with DLink and they told me port 20 must also be open for it to work. Verizon told me they have not disabled port 20 but I have tested it from dyndns.com and it shows it is closed. I also contacted Actiontec and they told me verizon disables port 20 for there residential users. I am a residential user. Does anyone know how to resolve my problem? Is it possible to use different ports? Please help.

The D-Link tech only gave you a bit of the information.  Port 20 is the FTP data channel that the FTP server opens to the client.  This connection is initiated from inside your network so it will show as closed when checking for open ports on your router.  You do not need to open it via port forwarding in your router configuration.

Is your DNS-323 set up using a static IP address?

If yes to the first question, have you set your router to forward FTP (port 21) to the static IP assigned to the DNS-323?

If you have not set your DNS-323 to a static IP address and/or set port forwarding for FTP to a static IP assigned to your DNS-323 you will need to do so in order to have any hope of getting up and running.

If yes to both the above questions I would suggesting reviewing a couple of help pages written by another user on configuring the DNS-323 FTP server for accessing files.

You will need to open ports on the router, we do not block 20 or 21. Portforward.com for more information on how to portforward.
