I was just curious about something.  Can you buy a different router than the one that comes with Fios Internet? And if so what router can I get Really like the Dlink brand just for an example.

If you only have FiOS Internet service you can use pretty much any router.

If you have TV service as well as Internet, you'll need to have the FiOS provided router to provide features, such as the program Guide, to your TV.

If you have TV service and feel the need, you can add a second router in addition to the FiOS router.

I'll add to excellent comments.

You can call Verizon and have them switch your ONT WAN connection from coax to Ethernet.  Then, you can easily use any router you want.  Know two important points when doing this:

o) Verizon set-top-boxes require a Verizon router as primary for guide data and video-on-demand.

o) Verizon only supports FiOS with their router.  If you have FiOS problems when using a non-Verizon router, you'll need to re-install a Verizon router before they will help you.

DSLreports has an excellent FAQ on different FiOS home network configurations.

Enjoy.

"Verizon set-top-boxes require a Verizon router as primary for guide data and video-on-demand"

False.

The Verizon router can be used as a secondary device & configured as a MoCA bridge to provide VOD & Program Guide services.

I use a Linksys WRT1900AC for my primary router with a LAN connection to a Actiontec MI424WR Rev. I configured as the MoCA bridge.

The WRT1900AC is a powerful router that provides all wireless devices throughout my 2-story 2500 sq. ft. home with 100% signal strength and Internet connections 35 Mbps / 35 Mbps at nearly wired speed.

You'd cut out the extra hop by having your ont converted to ethernet (was posted earlier in thread how to do it) and  then make your router the primary and the VZ router secondary via a lan-wan connection with the VZ router configured as a moca bridrge instead of as the gateway (also discussed earlier in thread)  There are a several VZ port forwarding rules set in the VZ router that you should forward from your router to it if you set it up this way, the rules are for support access, phone caller id etc.

I haven't tried using the Remote DVR or Caller ID features with my Linksys --> Actiontec MoCA Bridge set up.

Are you saying the default port forwarding rules are listed by the Actiontec's IOS or are they documented somewhere perhaps?

I have the FIOS router and pay for 25 meg speed but attached it to an Apple Airport router which now gives me 55 meg. (I didn't believe it when the Apple guy at the store told me I would but he was right).

I just connected the new router (in this case Apple) to the FIOS one.  I had 2 wifi then at my house but turned off the one from the FIOS router.
