Does Verizon offer a Wireless N Router or a Cable Modem Separate

Hello,

Due to living in an apartment and the need to stream video across my wireless network I need to move to the 5GHz band. I bought a TP-Link TL-WDR4300 Router thinking it would be the solution, and I basically turned my current Verizon router into just a cable modem (disabled the wireless functionality and DHCP). I got everything working, but the TP-Link router is proving to be less reliable than my Verizon router, needing frequent reboots in order to keep it functioning.

My question is this: Does Verizon offer a 5GHz router to its FIOS customers? That would be an ideal solution. If not, is just a cable modem available with no router functionality?

While I'm here, the room I'm streaming the video to is the upstairs bedroom, and all of the FIOS equipment is in the closet in this bedroom (not the router itself but the other equipment). Is there a way to avoid using the wireless all together even if the apartment isn't wired with Cat5? Seems like it could be a possibility with all the equipment being so close. I can't just move the router upstairs, as the media server has to be downstairs in the living room (and its more important that it be on the wired network).

Thanks in advance!

No.  The rev. I router is 2.4 Ghz only.

No.  FIOS does not use modems (except in limited MDU VDSL installations).

You may find some alternatives here:

Hello,

Verizon does have a wireless 802.11N router but currently it only supports 2.4 GHz its not dual band, next gen of routers will be built with 11ac and 11n chip and would support both 2.4GHz and 5GHz band.

Hope that answers your question.

FIOS routers are going AC? Unless they are unbelievably good, I still say buy your own. (specs only tell you so much) But an AC router might make the router rental fee for new customers a bit more justified. Unless they aggressively jack up that fee.

Since it is going AC, should we expect MIMO and Beamforming?

5GHz band signal doesn't do well with wall penetration.  The 2.4GHz band on my WNDR3700 has a far better range than the 5G band.  The same is true on AC routers but is overcome somewhat by the fact that the generation routers are equipped with more powerful radios, probably why they cost twice as much.Smiley Very Happy

I can't say much about Beam Forming, but MIMO is required as a part of the Wireless AC spec.
