Download speed pathetic

The download speed I pay for is 20/15 my actual according to speedtest.net is 7.8/2.6

What is that all about?

Does it do any good to contact Verizon? and if so which department?

Customer service in the past has been remarkably bad so I thought I'd look for suggestions here first.

We need to know a few things before anyone can comment.

When you ran the tests are you on a wired or wireless connection?

Is this speed consistent on all PC's?

Have you tried other speed test sites and see their responses?

There are many factors that could play a factor in why the speed is not correct and could very well be attributed to your PC.

Wired connection

Only 1 PC on "network"

Other spreed tests reveal a spread from 10.5 down/3.4 up to 4.4/1.7 Mb/s

The site I use to check it regularly is speedtest.net and the results are remarkably consistent at nearly 20/15 every time, this series of tests is definitely giving unusually slow results that I cant attribute to anything but the service. Is there a Verizon site that details area speeds, network difficulties, and the like?

also make sure you're using infospeed.verizon.net

speedtest.net is sporadic   it has some servers that can handle large download speeds like that, but it has a lot of servers that absolutely can not.

plus it's real popular so it also is subject to getting hammered by people using it at the same time, and thus getting bottlenecking.

these are not optimized settings and are likely the source of your problem.  

Run the Verizon Optimizer.

and then retest and you will likely see an immediate improvement.

yeah that thing is on crack if it's telling you that.

when you get it, slide the connection speed slider all the way to the right.

and above apply and exit is a radial button for "optimal settings"  choose that and then hit apply and ok the changes.

Not sure what to think.

I visited the site and again got the same speeds.

Then I made sure to visit the exact site you indicated "also make sure you're using infospeed.verizon.net" and after running the optimization tool the speed test indicated my speed as 15.9/4.5. At the bottom of the page it indicates "Your PC has not been optimized for the premium experience offered by High Speed Internet. Learn more about HSI Optimizer and run this test again."

So I dont know what to think. The speed indicated is more what I expect so I guess the process worked but why it says my PC has not been optimized after I have just completed the process is beyond me.
