FiOS and Newsgroups

I'm trying to connect to newsgroups with Grab-It.

I'm on FiOS 15/5.

The hostname I have is news.verizon.net

I'm using my verizon.net login.

I'm using port 119.

I'm unable to connect.  "Cannot connect to NNTP server 199.45.49.11:119 connect error 10060"

Any help/suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Verizon no longer has a newsgroup server.  This can be found at:

You cannot connect to new.verizon.net because it no longer exists. Verizon dropped support of newsgroups more than a year ago IIRC.

So your choices are a public access New Server, or one of several pay for use servers. If you don't need a lot of newsnet traffi (under 50mb/day), take a look at www.teranews.com.  They have reasonably good access for a one time very reasonable one time charge ($3.95 registration fee, no monthly fees)

My experiences with true public access news servers has been pretty miserable, and generally do not allow posting..

www.Giganews.com has also been one that I used. And can fill the Verizon FiOS download pipe, where not even verizon could, when they did have news servers. Giganews had always been able to fill what ever bandwidth I had available for my connection. But yes there is a monthy subscription fee.

Lame. I thought when I got rid of Time Warner I'd finally be able to use newsgroups again.

Major fail on Verizon's part, but since the competition isn't allowing access/providing servers, I guess they don't need to worry.

News Groups are no longer used the way they were originally intended to be used. I'm guessing this is why ISP's have been getting rid their own newsgroup servers. Not to mention, think about all storage needed to keep all the files people post just isn’t cost effective.    ISP News Servers were never all that great anyway;  TW and VZ both did not have all that great retention.

Not to mention downloading the multipart binaries of copy written work is a big no no now days. I suspect it is being watched much more closely than it once was. I am not sure how close, because I had decided it is not a good idea, and did not care to find out. But a steady stream at 35mbps from the news group will probably get you looked at. I know when I had 20mbps there were no issues in achieving that speed on GigaNews. I was not downloading copy written work.Smiley Wink
