FiOS Internet Disconnects at Midnight

As the subject says, basically, my FiOS Internet disconnects at midnight, or very close to midnight, basically 11:55-12:05PM is the disconnection time, the disconnect takes 5 minutes to recover (back online, 5 minutes after disconnect) everyday, this really isn't much of a problem, however, I play online multiplayer games, which is a huge problem, since I get disconnected from the game, it's really annoying.

Please help, I'm using a router given by Verizon FiOS, during the installation, connection is wireless, desktops connect by wireless adapter, and laptops connect by their built-in wifi card, we all disconnect, tried with desktops and laptops, disconnect during midnight.  Very annoying, please let me know on how to fix this issue of some sort.

Log into your router and see if it has a scheduled refresh set up.  It sounds like it was set up to refresh/renew at midnight and restart the router to prevent problems and because it's generally a good practice.  If it is, set it up for a later time when it will be unnoticed or just turn the scheduling off.

If you log into your router, using the 192.168.1.1 address, and check out all of the tabs and see if there is a section that talks about schedules or usage controls.  (I'm being vague because I'm not sure of which router you have or which interface it has but most have this sort of thing).  If you can find a schedule, it may have an entry to make it release your IP address and get a new one at midnight.  IP address is a number that is assigned to your computer from Verizon (like 173.74.192.180).  Sometimes web servers send requests for information about your IP address and it gets "clogged" with data.  Refreshing daily helps to prevent the "clogging" as it gives you a new IP address and/or releases the data pileup.

If you need more help or can't find the tab or log into the router, I can look up some information for you if I have a model name and number of your router.

Hope this helps.

For some reason, I can't get a new IP, I've tried almost every method, I believe my IP is static.  The router I'm using, is the one provided by FiOS, the actiontec router..?

It's probably not static but is just assigned to you for now.  I had the same one for around a year before it just changed on a reboot.  You shouldn't need a new IP address unless you're having troubles with connections all of the time.  I perused the manual for the Actiontek router and the only thing I can see is in the Parental controls, there is a Schedule Rules section.  Go to that screen and make sure you don't have any rules set up that could be causing it to auto refresh.  If that doesn't work, I'd advise either restoring the factory defaults or calling tech support to have them restore it back for you.  As far as I know, there should be no default reason for it to be auto restarting and as someone that does most of my computer work overnight, I can imagine how frustrating it would be.

I am fully aware of the parental controls, looked at that so many times, I never set up any, there are none.

First of all you sure you are really being disconnected? If so there should be a log entry for it on the router in the system log. The log isn't very big, so you need to check it fairly quickly after the service comes backup.

However my guess( and my experience) is that it probably isn't the router. Midnight seems to be the time Verizon likes to take some of their Domain Name Servers (DNS's) out of service. The loss of DNS service often looks like a disconnection.

So Two suggestions:

1). Check the router log and see if it is reporting a disconnection and why.

2). Change the DNS you are using. As others have pointed out, Verizon's DNS service often leaves something to be desired.

If you go to www.opendns.com, there are complete instructions on how to change the DNS you use to Open DNS, which I found to be a lot more reliable than Verizon's.

Good luck
