FIOS Internet, printer and camera problems

A month ago FIOS Internet  & TV was installed in my home. Ever since then, I have not been able to print. The other day, I couldn't download photos from my camera.  I've called technical support three times. One said he couldn't help, the second said I should take my CPU to Staple to have it serviced. Last night, I got a fellow overseas who put me on hold for almost an hour, then I hung up.

Also, a technician was supposed to come to my home last evening, but never showed up. Technical support in person & over the phone appears to be below standard, whatever standard Verizon sets.  This has all be very frustrating. If Verizon can't help me resolve this, I'll consider going back to their competitor.

It seems that there is some type of conflict between the ethernet/usb cable and the printer & camera usb.  How do I resolve this?

First things first, the internet and TV have absolutely nothing to do with being able to print or get pictures off your camera.

It sounds like you have a driver problem, most likely a conflict driver problem. When the FiOS networking software was installed it could very well be causing a conflict by trying to use some of the same drivers that your printer and camera use. Or, it is a software issue, try uninstalling your printer and camera software, and reinstalling it. A lot of times this can remedy a driver conflict as well.

If that doesn't fix the problem, then take your pc in to be serviced. They'll be able to get it fixed for you. It's not an internet or tv problem, that has nothing to do with it. It's your computer, and a software issue.

The VZW technicians were right. One, they can't help you, and two, you should take your computer to be serviced.

Actually, I did take my computer to be serviced and was told there is nothing wrong with the printer. They even printed pages off of it.  But the ethernet/usb cable wasn't plugged in at the time (it was home).  And I've uninstalled the printer software & reinstalled it. I'll continue to work on this problem. Thank you.

Did you take your pc and your printer in to be serviced? They printed a page off of it in their shop, with your pc and the printer you're having a problem with? How is your printer and camera connecting to the pc? Through usb cables? or a usb port hub? You might have a conflict issue with your usb drivers. If that's the case, you simply uninstall and reinstall new drivers for your usb ports.

There are a lot of issues with different softwares and drivers conflicting, if multiple items are trying to use the same drivers, it will cause errors. As your internet software will auto take priority in this case, the other devices trying  to use them will not function properly. Hense why they were able to print on the pc and printer when the ethernet cable was not plugged in. The driver priority was changed. You need to replace the drivers for these devices. Easy task.

Also, run your auto updates for your copy of windows, updating windows is one of the most important things you can do for your pc. You'd be amazed how many problems can be solved by installing a simple update for windows.

Update your windows, see if that fixes the issue, then uninstall the drivers for the printer and camera. Meaning go to device manager, select the printer and camera drivers and select uninstall. Then reatatch and install the device drivers again.  Drivers are different from software.

Both camera and printer have a cable that is plugged into a usb port on the back of the cpu. The computer does get windows updates, (and also gets defragged every month, whether it needs it or not) and cookies cleaned out etc.

Last night computer tried to install Explorer 8 but there was a problem with not responding, so the download didn't happen & I have to go into windows Updates & try again.  I think the "not responding" problem comes when the computer is just turned on because the antivirus runs in the background (it's CA antivirus)

After the problem started initally I deleted a lot of unused data too.

I'll try your suggestions this weekend and let you know the result. Thank you.

When you had Verizon FIOS Internet installed did the technician install any software on your PC or did they use their laptop to do your configuration and setup ? If they used their laptop then no changes were made to your PC and all that they did was provide an Ethernet Connection to your PC which is the same thing that a Cable Company would have done.

When mine was setup a month ago the technician did everything on his laptop.  I just connected one of my PCs to the ActionTec Router to ensure that I had internet connectivity.

If Verizon did not install software on your PC then that have nothing to do with your camera and printer issues and Technical Support would not be able to assist you.  If they did install some software then remove it and see if your camera and printer come back to life.

Catmom,

In the technical support for FiOS internet we are only able to support the verizon line of products (internet connection, VISS, etc) I would refer you to the manufacturer's technical support since they are familiar with their own product and  the issues that can arise with using it.

Hi Brian McD & Jim

When the technician did the installation I wasn't in the room. He did have a notebook pc with him.  The ethernet cable connected to the back of the cpu also has a usb cable connected too, one line going into two ports.  It is why I think there is a conflict in the usb ports. This weekend I'm going to try the suggestion to uninstall & reinstall drivers for the printer and the camera.  Will see what happens.

There was no problem with either the printer or the camera before the FiOS intallation. The printer troubleshooter hasn't been able to resolve the issue. I'll keep working on it.

Thank you,

Hi,

If i disconnect the USB plug that is connected to the ethernet cable (it's like a siamese connection),  the printer works!  (yeah!) Problem solved.  I am going to assume that the camera will work the same way.

So, why is the USB plug that is connected to the ethernet cable neded?  If i don't plug it in, what won't work on the Internet? hmmm......I won't be able to print any pages from the Internet without an intermediate step, which is email the page to myself & then print after disconnecting the USB plug.

Ethernet and USB cable should have nothing to do with each other, and certainly can not be connected together unless you have a USB Ethernet Adaptor. If your PC does not have an Ethernet port and you have a USB to Ethernet adaptor, then that could be the problem. Verizon FIOS is not responsible for your Ethernet Port on your PC, and there could be issues with the USB port for the printer, camera, and Ethernet. If your PC does not have a built in Ethernet port, I would sugest having an Ethernet card installed in the PC, and not using a USB Ethernet Adaptor. Or get the device conflict with the USB Ports fixed. It could be an issue with one device wanting USB 2.0 and the other devices not supporting it.
