I have an Actiontec M1424-WR router and for the last 6 months i have not been able to access the internet on a second computer in the house. First i was told the telephone was interfering, then i was told it was because the second computer was in the basement, etc. etc. etc. I now have a laptop that sits on my desk - 2 feet from the router that is hooked up to my desktop and i see every wireless network in the neighborhood except mine. Verizon help line has been of no help - i'm ready to switch back to cable

Try updating the driver on the wireless card. First, connect your wireless computer to the modem/router with a cable so you have a solid connection for this. With Vista, click start, then network, then network and sharing center at the top. From there, manage network connections, then right click on the wireless connection. Under the networking tab, click configure. Go to the driver tab, and update the driver. This may take a few minutes, but Vista should be able to find an update. Once I did this, my laptops worked fine. If you have XP, I can't tell you exactly how to do this, but it should be pretty similar to these steps.

Have you logged into the Actiontec (192.168.1) to ensure that the Wireless is turned on, SSID is being Broadcasted, and that you have the correct SSID and WEP Key ?

Yes, i am connected. Someone suggested i need a new router. I was able to connect on an unsecured line and i am able to see all the neighborhood networks, which he concluded meant nothing was wrong with either my laptop or the second desktop. Any other ideas?

I can't configure my laptop because it's from where i work and i don' t have admin rights. the help desk at work suggested there was a problem with the router because i was able to connect on an unsecured line and am able to view all the wireless networks in my neighborhood. Any thoughts on the router issue?

From your Desktop Computer that is hard wired to the router:
Logon to Actiontec
Ensure that Wireless is enabled
Ensure that SSID is being Broadcast
Record SSID and WEP Key
If everything looks ok on the router then try to power cycle it and rthen refresh your network list on the laptop.
If it is still acting up perhaps the router is bad and Verizon may replace it.

If you can not see your routers SSID from your laptop, then it may not be broadcasting it. and the settings may have been changed. You can reset your router to default by using a paperclip and holding in the reset button on the back of the router for 30 seconds. This will reset your wireless to on, and the SSID and key should then match the sticker on the router.
Well if you are able to connect wirelessly with your corporate laptop on an unsecured network, perhaps they should not have admin rights either.
You can go into the Verizon router and disable wireless security and see if it works, but this is a bad thing and I would not do that. Unless you wanted everyone else to share your network, like you did by connecting to others routers. Get the SSID and Key from the sticker on the router and have your work admins enter it in as a home wireless profile for you. Most wireless NICs allow for multiple profiles to be configured. Then it should work if your PC can see your SSID in the available connections list.

bojangrl , Please let us know how you made out with the hard reset on your router which was suggested above if your able to see your SSID. If you still cant see your routers SSID but can see all your neighbors let us know. It could be your router & would be happy to send you a new one. Also verify your wireless light on the router is on & login to the router to make sure the SSID is broadcastin as also suggested above. Thanks Brett

I've found that if you have a PC with Vista, it won't acces the wireless router if you have it set not to broadcast the SSID.

When you are establishing a NEW Wireless Connection is is easiest to have the SSID being broadcast. This is not just a Vista Issue. Once you establish the connection you can turn it back off.
