FIOS Quantum Router Wifi Range

Alright, so i may have a little issue..

I just got my router around an hour ago, plug n play did its job and everything worked off the bat without having to install anything..

Setup the Wifi settings etc so on, routers working great speed wise, no difference than my previous router tho which isnt surprising..

So the MAIN issue i have would be the Wifi signal.. its TERRIBLE compared to the previous router with 2 external anntenae, i tested it with my phone to see if the wifi would be better outside and it definately isnt.. with the previous router i could go all the way to my sons swing set and still have a decent signal, not to mention an especially decent signal in my driveway now i cant even get to the swing set without the Wifi going poof..

So my question is, how do i resolve this? Ive never liked Internal Routers, ive always known that their wifi range sucks but i really dont feel like sending the router back.. And id rather not have to spend money on a wifi extender either..

So any help would be appreciated, thanks..

the Router is SUPPOSED to have superior Wifi Range, i call that false advertising.

So any help would be appreciated, thanks..

Are you connected to the 2.4ghz or the 5.0ghz range of the new router. 5.0ghz range of the router is meant to be faster but doesn't penetrate as well as the 2.4ghz. I have the router and on the 2.4ghz range it works just like the red band Actiontec. the 5.0ghz does not travel as far.

You can create 2 separate networks in the router to see if this is your issue.

Yeah thats exactly what the problem was..

i did a lil testing and i remembered i read somewhere that 5G range is terrible..

Well its true.. the 2.4 range is a little better then the previous router, so thats not to bad.

And the 5G while obviously being faster is quite limited when it comes to range.. If you arent right near or  above/below it the range just sucks.

But another reason for the range being terrible is that they chose to go with Internal Anntenae, very bad choice.. They usually always have crappier range compared to externals..

But yeah, problem solved i suppose..

Secondly.. is there a firmware update somewhere? i checked on the control panel and theres no firmware update check option like in my previous router

There is no firmware option. It's just pushed through when there is a new one.

I had signal issues when I first got mine. I couldn't even get full range next to the router.

Here is what fixed my issue.

As much as a pain it might be do a hard reset on it. Stick something small in the reset button on the back and hold it for 10 seconds then let go. Set it all back up.

That fixed my issue and I get 5 ghz range even in my back yard. If that doesn't fix it try changing the channels. If you pick a less congested one it will improve the signal.

I guess ill get that a try if i ever feel like doing it,,

I may just stick with the 2.4 though since those speeds are high enough and my phone is the only device i use that accepts 5ghz so ehh..

Guess ill find out though..
