Getting packet loss, high ping, and jitters. Verion refuses to acknowledge it..

I have been experiencing very unstable ping and packet loss for the past couple of months, which has been affecting my online gaming experience. Not knowing what the root of the problem was, I got verizon to change my outdated modem to a newer version hoping that it would resolve the issue. Thankfully, it did resolve the issue and I have been getting a very stable 3-10ping through pingtest.net and the online game I play. However, after a month, I am experiencing terrible ping issues again. The ping is very unstable spiking from 10-90ping which makes anything unplayable. My character in the game would react 2-3 seconds later..

Whenever I contact verizon regarding this issue, the person behind the phone/computer does not seem to understand what i'm talking about. All they do is run some cmd command from their end and reset my modem expecting the issue to be resolved. Who am i suppose to reach to resolve this issue? Changing my modem certainly did not resolve the issue, so I really don't know what to do anymore but to change my ISP.

Hi gwonuk4,

We certainly do apologize that you've had this kind of experience. Latency is very important especially when it comes to online gaming. We would be happy to take a look into this for you. Let me ask also, when you are gaming, are you connected to the modem via a wire or is it connected via WiFi instead? We ask about this because if it's via WiFi, this can also cause lost packets if some kind of interference or distance issue is coming into the equation as well. Reach back out to us when you get a chance so that we can gather some more information and see if we can work towards a resolution.

Thanks,

CJ

Hello, thanks for the reply.

Yes, my modem is connected to the desktop via wire.

I am having the same issue ever since I came back from vacation. Before 12/16 I was having no issues and ever since 12/28 I have been getting an increasing amount of packet loss when play online games (This is the only time i notice it).

I have been having the same issue as well as quite a few other verizon customers I know.

The 4th hop on a verizon handoff is causing alot of issues, I have tried setting the timeout delay incredibly long still times out - totally unresponsive. This is whats causing the majority of the packetloss

The Request Timed Out reply from hop #4 is meaningless.  It just indicates that server is configured to not reply to packet pings.

The increase in latency you're seeing could be happening between hops 3 and 4, or between 4 and 5.

If I trace route to that same IP from here in NY I get additional lops that don't respond:

Trace complete.

The bottom line to me is 72 ms is a pretty decent latency between the east and west coasts.

Its not about ping times/latency in this issue, its a packetloss issue which is hard for me to diagnose on my end but I can experience the effects of it. When games de-sync and stutter or pause for a moment then all of a sudden catch up on 2-3 seconds worth of information simultaneously theres a breakdown somewhere. I'm just not able to pinpoint where

Yep, the varagies of the Internet can be hard to pin down.

You might try a different DNS, maybe OpenDNS, for example to see if a different routing helps.

You can also try finding if you're actually experiencing packet loss, and if so, how much, by using the command "ping 216.52.241.254 -t"  without the quotes.  Let the ping run for a minute or so and then type Ctl-C to stop it.

When I run that test I get zero packet loss to the server at 216.52.241.254.
