How fast/slow is FIOS wifi speed supposed to be?

Hi

I am currently on the FIOS 50mpbs / 25mpbs plan

While I get the max speed on ethernet, I barely get 1mbps on wireless be it a laptop, phone, tablet, whatsoever

I understand wifi is slower than ethernet, but is around 1mpbs normal or is it slower than it should be?

Also, my router's been around 3-4 years old and I was wondering if it might be affecting the slow speed as well.

Thanks for the help!

Since you are getting what you are paying for wired, it's just a matter of finding out what could be causing the slow wireless speeds. Wireless speeds will vary for a lot of reasons. The wireless network card in your device, the settings on the router, network interference within your home, channel congestion from neighbors, the servers you are actually connecting to, etc..

If you are using speedtest try testing more then one server on it. If I try the default I get 1 mbps myself, but all others test fine. Does more then 1 server show low speeds? What about on the Verizon speed test?

Are you using an old g band router? What model router do you have?

Currently my router model is "MI424WR"

I currently reside in Los Angeles and these are screenshots of the speedtests..

on laptop...

with ethernet  : http://puu.sh/9Tcsx/45100aa2bd.jpg

without ehternet but in less than 2 feet radius of router: http://puu.sh/9TcAG/e298f94f67.jpg

on my phone... (could not use verizon speed test on the phone so i tried OOKLA which many recommended)

nearest location( los angeles) : http://puu.sh/9TcST/96eff815f9.jpg

somewhere near but not spot on (fullerton) : http://puu.sh/9TcPB/812e1aa525.jpg

oh and a question. i've heard about the wireless bgn thing. how am i supposed to know what wireless level my devices support?

thanks

There are different versions of MI424WR. Does yours have the silver band or red band? One antenna or 2?

If it has a silver band and one antenna then the router doesnt support n band only g which could very well be why you are getting slow speeds on wireless. An upgrade to the rev. i (red band) or bridging a 3rd party n band router would improve it. Even the MI424WR Rev. G (silver band with the dual antenna's which has n band) should work better. You can get those very cheap on ebay.

There is something you could try first which may improve the speeds some, but if you are on g band you arent going to get high on wireless although the speeds should be higher then they are.

Log into the router and change the channel that its set to. If its set to 6 try 11 or 1. If its set to 11 try the others then run the speed tests again. You might see no change, slightly better or worse. Almost everyone in my neighborhood is on channel 6 so if I use 6 my speed comes to a crawl. A program called inSSIDer which used to be free but now charges allowed one to see activity in their neighborhood. You can find free apps for smartphones that will do the same thing.

As far as bgn if your computer isnt that old then it most likely supports n band. My laptop which is old does not so I bought a $14 usb adapter for it. Highest wireless speed I could get on g band was 24 mbps down.

I dont know what version of Windows you are using or Mac but you can google how to find details of your network adapter for whatever you are using to see what it supports. You can also search the model number where usually you can find details of the computer you have.

To find it on Windows 7 go to control panel > hardware and sound > devices and printers > device manager > find the wireless adapter > right click and select properties > select the advanced tab then you'll see something in there that says b/g or b/g/n. That will tell you what your computers network card supports what.

IMO this sure sounds like being stuck on g band and just needing an n band router. Try the channel thing first though and report back if that made any difference.

btw run the fios speed optimizer if you haven't done so already. http://my.verizon.com/services/speedoptimizer/fios/

I'm not trying to discredit others that are trying to help you, but the fact of the matter is the antennas on Verizon provided routers downright suck. The fastest my wifi has ever gotten from my Actiontec MI424 WR Rev.I with firmware 40.21.10.3 is 17.47 down/ 7.83 up. You have two options. If you have a old router/buy a cheap wireless n router you can set it up as a AP(access point) so all of your wireless devices connect WAY faster. Then plug that AP into the back of the Verizon router. Or if you receive your internet from a ethernet cable coming from the ONT you can use your own router in place of the Verizon router.

This is so far from the truth. I have a rev. i that is all the way across my house and I get great signal even outside and speeds are high. Even on my old Westell g band router I received good signal except for the very back of my house. 2 or 3 story homes might lose signal from verizons routers all depending on location and any possible electrical interference, but the op has the router very close to his computer. His issue isnt the antenna.

If you are experiencing lower speeds yourself, you might want to look into many reasons why besides the antenna.

'This is so far from the truth" yeah okay pal. I don't have that problem because I replace the crap Verizon router with my own router. Now my average wifi speeds now that I've upgraded all devices to 802.11ac is 370 to 430Mbps.

You ever think maybe you had a defective router? Oh wait that cant be possible right?  Funny how I dont have issues nor does anyone I personally know with theirs.
