If this is to be believed, you may get to use your IPhone on the Verizon Network soon.

Rick,

I was able to set this up today without issue. These steps apply to the 3G iPhone, if you have the original iPhone, most of the steps should still apply:

  1. Choose Settings, then select Mail, Contacts, Calendars
  2. Under accounts, select Add Account....
  3. On the add account screen, choose Other
  4. Enter your Name, email address (xxxx@verizon.net), password, and a Description of the account and choose Save
  5. At this point, you'll see a message that says Looking Up Account Information and then Verifying Account information
  6. It took about 2-3 minutes to set up and I was connected to WiFi at home during set up - it might take a little longer if you're on the 3G or Edge network
  7. Eventually, I had a message pop up that said "cannot connect using SSL - do you want to try setting up the account without SSL?" Click Yes
  8. You will see a message that says POP verified and then the Verizon account will show up in the email accounts list
Hope this helps!

The problem with this setup is that it will only work correctly within your home network. This is a common issue with home ISPs such as Verizon, Comcast, and Brighthouse/Roadrunner. You can receive your emails but not send when out and about. There are workarounds using AT&T server cmwx or whatever it is, but you have to be using Edge/3G and not wifi. It's crappy, but not an issue with the iPhone/portable computer. It's on the end of the ISPs. Hopefully that previously posted link will be a true solution. I worked at Apple at the Genius bar for a few years, and this issue was the bane of my existence from the introduction of the iPhone lol

I have no issues with this set up sending and receiving emails both from my home network and via 3G/Edge.

Don,

Your post helped me retrieve messages on my IPhone 3G but I cannot seem to send any.  Do you have any suggestions?

yeah get a windows mobile phone. :smileyhappy:
@ But it's to late for that. Why not use edge/3g, if the outgoing.verizon.net does not work for the smtp server try to put in cwmx.com ( <--at&t smtp server for non .att.com mail) as the smp server. I have never had a issue sending mail out from windows mobile phone from verizon email accouint.  If you are using wifi from your fios router you can use fios outgoing smtp server outgoing.verizon.net no matter what your email address is (ie. @gmail.com). That works in most cases. Most ISPs have smtp blocked from any other email provider. Its because issues with spam. It keeps spam off their servers.

Joseph,

About the only thing I can think of to try off the top of my head is go in to Settings, then Mail, Contacts and Calendars. From the list of accounts, select your Verizon account, then tap on the Outgoing Mail Server, where it says SMTP.

My outgoing SMTP mail server is set to outgoing.verizon.net, but there is a pretty long list of other potential SMTP servers to choose from. You might try selecting turning on one of the other SMTP mail servers and see if that helps. If I was doing it, I would probably go through them one at a time, until I found the one that works.

Beyond that, without seeing your actual settings, I don't have any other ideas. I do recall posting elsewhere about a different outgoing mail problem - you can check it out here http://forums.verizon.com/vrzn/board/message?board.id=FiOS_Internet&message.id=413#M413. In this case though, turned out to be an authentication problem for the user and not an iPhone setting.

Good luck.

Don
