If i have no FIOS STB's (just a cable-card) can i get whatever router i want ?

I have FIOS- currently all i have is:

The Gateway Router

A cable-card

Recently i belive my router had a serious breach and Verizon's reponse was typcial (i.e. useless - FYI if a Verizon "techical specialist" tells you to rename your SSID with something only you know, but tell me so i we can help you fix it AND then asks for your password -RUN !)) and so i'm replcaing the router.

This is what i'm thinking of buying:

http://www.bestbuy.com/site/linksys-wireless-ac3200-dual-band-wi-fi-router-black-blue/5601000.p?skuI...

Here's what i can't figure out:

1. Do i need to get a seperate modem or will the router above do everything i need?

.2. Do i just need to contact Verizon and have them switch me to Etherney Only (so no coax)

3, This router has built in VPN (and i already signed up for this VPN  (https://www.privateinternetaccess.com/pages/buy-vpn/) - what do i need to do to make sure it works ok ?

4/ Anyting else i should know ?

thanks in advance !

If you are just using internet only. That means no tv with set top boxes you need only have your broadband provisioned for Ethernet only.

If if you are currently connected by coaxial for internet you need to again switch it to Ethernet via calling 1-800-VERIZON

if if you are using coaxial to any tv or phone you will have to have a router with that connection. With the Verizon Quantum Gateway you have both. But you do not need to use the Verizon router, however unless one is available in case you need tech support Verizon may not assist you. But it's up to you.

read the manual for virtual private network setup steps. It should be easy to just put in the correct setting.

as far as the router password, you can immediately go back in and change it. Verizon then won't have it. And a cheaper alternative don't you think?

i will tell you that a Verizon router can be accessed by tech support without a password. They often reset the routers and if they wanted could access with out one.

Thanks for the reply.

I have no STBS at all.

I use one  cable card in my Tivo which I believe has the coax attached to enable the MOCA connection

cablecatds do not get fios TV guides or VOD etc so I'm assuming since that's not something I need I just need to make sure I can still feed me TiVo the MOCA connection and I should be all set ?

Not sure if TiVO supports MOCA.

It does support QAM which is how you get TV channels.

Problem is that you can only get Internet one way.

So most routers only support ethernet.

So if you use Internet via Ethernet, you would need a MOCA bridge of some sort to distribute Internet via MOCA from your router.

Or get Internet for TiVO via Ethernet or WIFI.

Yeah i think i may need a MOCA brigde- and yea the ROAMIO series of TiVo (which i have) supports MOCA - you just plug the cable in and it sets itself up :0)
