Major bottlenecking of certain websites

Hi all, I have been experiencing bottlenecking with certain sites and it has really been driving me up the wall lately. Specifically rapidgator.net and dropbox. I am currently downloading some files from rapidgator at 33KB/sec, this is absolutely ridiculous. I am able to download at about 6MB/s from other sources, my speed tests are over 50Mbps and my neighbor/friend has comcast and he has no issues downloading from said sites, I even connected to his network from my home and downloaded a file from rapidgator at about 4MB/s.

Has anyone else experienced these kinds of problems? Anything I can do about it? I have been doing some reading about replacing the Actiontec MI424WR router with my own but I'm not sure if this would help. Thanks!

If you have TV service, it is a bit tricky to replace the Actiontec.

Especially if you have or will upgrade to Quantum.

As for delays, you will see multiple threads about people seeing slowdowns to various internet locations.

Probably all part of the same issue.

I has nothing to do with your router it has to do with Verizon and their bad peering practices.  They buy 'just enough' bandwidth from major isps or negotiate congesed settlement free peering ( from places like AWS, where dropbox is ) that is gets clogged up and that's why you see those pathetic speeds.  I have my own router and push my full 500/500 to speed tests but from a large portion of the internet it is complete crap.

That's what I figured, so all these threads about people purchasing their own routers and connecting directly to the network port on the ONT box and having to get do all of these work arounds to get VOD and the chaneel guide working again are just so they can use their own router?

I want to upgrade the provided Actiontec because the signal is not very good in some areas of my home but I always thought that all you had to do was bypass/disable the wireless function and plug the new router into the Actiontec. Is this not correct? Xfinity is looking pretty sweet right now.

I did the following:

Requested RJ45 vs MOCA connection.

Put the actiontec connected to the COAX TV runs in the house on my LAN (switch)

Used my own router connected to the ONT and to my LAN switch

You can buy as many access points/wifi routers as you want and run them in 'Access point' mode where all it does is bridges your LAN with the WIFI so those devices can also use the network.  Just connect them to the LAN switch via cat5 or better and set them up in AP/Bridge mode.

And that should allow tv/tvguide/vod to work, in theory 🙂  I won't lie, the actiontec isn't a great piece of gear and I ditched it ASAP for my own setup.

I don't even think my ONT has a network port, is the ONT the box with the battery in it?

Is there a good thread with detailed information on switching out the Actiontec? I sorta understand your explenation but not entirely.

ONT is the box on the wall typically outside your house.

It is the one where the fiber cable comes in and the coax and phone lines come out.

If you don't have TV, converting to another router is fairly easy.

First you need to run an ethernet cable from your ONT to your router location.

Then get with support to move Internet from coax to ethernet.

Release IP on the coax and connect up ethernet to your router.

Having similar issues. FIOS Internet - random websites (including the Verizon Forums site) are very slow to load or time out. Verizon says there is "no issue in your area". So clearly this is something bigger than just the router.

Don't make your setup overly complicated.

The Actiontec is a good router unless you have specific advanced features that only certain high end routers have.

The WiFi on the router is just average or some people claim below average.   The models prior to the latest updated model do not have dual band radios (no 5 Ghz or AC. )

The simplest solution if you need more WiFi coverage is to install another AP or use a router a repurpose another router as an AP.

Simply run an Ethernet cable from any LAN port on your FIOS router to a LAN port on the AP (or repurposed router).

Be sure that you have disabled the DHCP server on the second device.

No need to have Verizon convert you OTN connection  from coaxial to Ethernet.

You can leave the radis on the Actiontec on if you want,  just be sure that it is on a different  channel than the AP.

As for SSIDs you can either make them all different or experiment using some or all the same.  Many discussions about the pros and cons of either approach.  My preference is all different so it is easy for someone to thell if they are connected to the nearest and therefore probably the strongest signal.
