Old router causing my slow speeds?

I have fios triple play, my router is a Verizon 9100EM. I pay for speeds of 35/35 which I do achieve when connected to the router thru ethernet. However all my wireless laptops in the home connect at 20/20 at best. i am fairly certain this router I have is the older wireless 'G' technology not capable of getting me 35/35 which i pay for. Does verizon have a newer router to get me the wireless 'N'  speeds of 35/35?

Thanks

Bob

The latest version of the Actiontec MI-424 does support 802.11n, which could provide considerably higher speeds than 802.11g can. The rub is that unless you have 150mbps FiOS service, Verizon isn't going to provide a 802.11N capable router any time soon except by accident.

However you should be able to buy an 802.11N access point/router  from an online, or electronics store without 'breaking' the bank (less than $50).  It is then a matter of connecting it to one of the ports on the router, and configuring both. There are directions for exactly what needs to be done elsewhere in this Forum.

As a practical matter, it pretty hard to get past about 20mbps even on 802.11g (which is in theory capable of 54mbps). There is no shortage of reasons this happens.

Have you considered moving some devices you're looking to get your speeds to the most onto an Ethernet connection? The Westell 9100EM can support speeds past 100Mbps even though it only has 100Mbps ports and Wireless G. You won't have a good time trying to get an N unit from Verizon though. You're best off going the Ethernet route but setting up a Wireless N Access Point would get you to where you want to go. The next step in that problem would be to ensure your devices all support N and WPA2 so that older devices don't bring you back to square one.
