Packet loss during gaming. (PC) and not enough speed UL

SO I have been getting packet loss during gaming. Mostly BF4. Also I just upgraded to 75/75 plan. Spent an hour in chat trying to resolve the speed issue. No fix.

However the server we own for BF4 sent us a link to run a tracert/ping. As you can see there is one hiccup.

My question is. Regular support more than likely will not be able to resolve this. So it will probably get escalated. Is their a direct contact to elevated support?

Also, is their a way to go around the one host being unresponsive? If not how does this get fixed?

Any other insight from people who may have knowledge on this would be great. Im more of an enthusiast when it comes to PC stuff and networking. No expert by any means. Thanks

Hello,

Taking a look at your traceroute, I don't think the one host not responding is causing the issue. I get the same thing on every traceroute to any server, it must just be some router on the internal Verizon network that dosen't respond to traceroutes.

What I did notice however, is the link from Telia to you is getting 1% packet loss.

| nyk-bb1-link.telia.net - 1 | 1280 | 1279 | 15 | 29 | 157 | 16 |

How long has this problem been occuring?

The location where you are getting packet loss seems to be the peering location for verizon (the central place where they connect up with other internet providers). It could just be a temporary issue, and Telia, being a massive backbone internet provider I'm sure will fix it soon enough.

Here in Pittsburgh, PA, my traceroutes are showing no packet loss to the server, but then again my link goes though ash-bb3-link.telia.net while yours is going though nyk-bb1-link.telia.net

Thanks for the reply. I didnt even notice that. 1%  Im currently doing tracerts with NFO to figure out packet loss. Alot of people complain about BF4 packet loss. So I have decided to dig deeper and find out why. I just ran another one and found a packet loss like you noticed from another provider. It doesnt seem to impact things dramatically, just more of an annoyance. But if that packet is me stayiing alive in game!!! 🙂

So heres another one I just ran with playes in game.

Is there a way to fix that little packet loss? Is it even worth it?

Thought or insight?

Thanks Scott

See if NFOServers can throw a 10GB Test file up on a server in their datacenter for you to pull down. See if you're able to maintain full download rate, or if you see any loss.

TeliaSonera and Verizon tend to have on and off problems due to congestion, so even though the loss values you are seeing are not bad, packet loss can be subtle. It can appear before major latency starts to appear or before other points begin to see loss.

With many routers on the Internet de-prioritizing traceroute data, it's hard to accurately gauge where the congestion is. With Verizon it is usally at the peering points, and this is determined by finding game servers routing over Level3, AT&T, etc, instead of Telia. If the problem were closer to you on Verizon's network, you should be seeing problems to most game servers, as the routing in Verizon's network stays pretty much with fixed bundles until you're on the "Verizon Business / Alter.net / UUNet" backbone.

When it comes to packet loss, there isn't much you can do unfortunately, since at that point your at the mercy of that internet/backbone provider to get things worked out.
