problems connecting second pc to the router

Hi everyone,

My first PC is connected to my FIOS router and everything is fine with that. I know the router admin login and the router password. But I am having a hard time connecting my second PC to my FIOS router and to the internet.

I have been using the FIOS Connection Wizard, and I have been getting the following message:

"Connectivity between your computer and your Verizon FIOS router is working fine, however we are unable to login to the router to collect the SSID and WEP Key"

It seems as though the connection wizard does not even acknowledge the router password I enter. I will type in the password, then press enter and the wizard does not seem to do much with the password. I rebooted the router, changed the router login and password, and entered those new details into the wizard, but the wizard wont connect. When I try again, the wizard prompts me for the password of the old admin!

Any ideas regarding how to solve this problem? I appreciate your help.

You can logon to teh router from the 1st PC, get the SSID and WEP Key, and then Manually enter it into the 2nd computer.

Thanks for the reply.

How do I enter the WEP key and other details in the 2nd PC? Should I use the connection wizard or some MicroSoft Windows wizard?

Microsoft has some software to manage the wireless connection.

you find your Network froma list, tell it to connect, and enter your wep key.

What Microsoft Operating System are you using ?

Your ESSID and WEP Key can be found physically on your router.  There should be a sticker documenting the routers manufacturer and model number. The information you need should be located above the bar code along with the MAC ID.

Also, routers are packaged and delivered with a sticker covering this information for privacy issues which may or may not still be intact. When you restart your router it restores the default config. and resets your administrative username and password.

Thanks a lot for the help.

I realized that I was not entirely clear in my original post. I am not trying to set up a wireless connection, but an ethernet connection to the router.

I am still not getting success connecting to the internet with my 2nd PC. Do I need to enter the WEP key and other details if I want to connect my 2nd PC to the router via an ethernet connection? Should I be using the connection wizard or some MicroSoft software?

Even Easier...

Use Ethernet Cable to plug in the 2nd PC to the Verizon Router and Turn On PC.

You are now on-line...

No need for a Verizon Connection Wizzard...

If you run into problems let us know what OS the 2nd PC is running and how you have it connected and I'm sure someone here can assist further.

Thanks again for the help.

The OS on both PCs is Windows XP.

I connected the 2nd PC to the router using an ethernet cable. On the 2nd PC, the Local Area Connection status reads: connected. The Activity reads: Packets Sent: 552. Packets received: 0.

If you are using the FIOS connection wizard and it is asking for your SSID and WEP you are trying to set up a wirless connection.   Make sure to choose the correct option, it should be something like,  set up new router or internet connection.  ie. Don't choose, setup new wireless connection.

If you still have problems then,

On your computer that successfully connects to the internet, right click your local area connection under network connections and go to properties. Scroll down to Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) , highlight it and click the properties button. Use the same settings you find here on your second computer. If your router has DHCP turned off and under these properties your IP and DNS settings are visable then on your second computer input all the same settings except change the last number of your IP address.

Ex.       1st computer settings  : IP - 192.168.10.15   then

               Set 2nd computer to : IP - 192.168.10.16

Hope this helps.

make sure that the ethernet cable from the computer is connected to the LAN (yellow plugs on router) side of the router, not the WAN (white plug on router)
