Quick Verizon FiOS Question

Well say I have another computer in another room different from the actual FiOS Modem. I read somewhere that you can just connect the Ethernet from the other computer to a ethernet wall port and then internet shall work. Is this right? Or do I have to buy a router?

Thanks.

Verizon provides a router, typically an Actiontec MI424 WR which has 4 Ethernet ports, and a wireless access point (Wi-Fi). One way or another you need to connect the computer to the router. There are basically 3 ways to do that:

1). Run an Ethernet cable from the router to other room and connect it to the computer

2). Use Wireless (Wi-Fi) connectivity and connect to the Wireless access point in the router

3). If there is a coaxial cable in the other room that works for FiOS Television, you can  connect the computer via the Coax using a MoCA bridge (a device that converts the Cable Internet signal to Ethernet signal). MoCA bridges tend to be relatively expensive. Usually a Motorola NIM100 from eBay will be the least expensive.

If the Ethernet wall port is connected to the router, yes, you can simply plug the computer into it. This is effectively running an Ethernet Cable from the router to the other room. However somewhere the Ethernet wall port needs to connect to the router.

Option 1 and 2 will provide the best performance, option 2 is likely to be easiest however.

The answer I believe is "maybe" Smiley Very Happy

If your house is prewired for ethernet in separate rooms then you should be able to just plug in your computer and go.

My house was built about 5 yrs ago and luckily it was completely wired throughout the house.  In addition, I received a free wireless router from Verizon when I signed up for service.  So, I can plug into the network in any room with an ethernet outlet or surf wireless.
