Slow internet

Is anyone else having this problem. When my TV is off, using a wireless laptop with verizon router, loading internet pages is very fast. When I turn on the TV, it slows to a crawl. Any ideas what the problem could be?

is the router near the TV?

FiOS TV doe snot use the wireless signal at all, and only uses the router for VOD, widgets, MRDVR, and the onscreen guide.. so it is not like the TV is using any bandwith....

Try resetting your router and see fi that helps.... and if the router IS near the TV... perhaps try moving the router further waya from the TV.... it is possible the TV or other equipment in the TV setup is causing some sort of interference with the wireless signal/router

The router is upstairs and the TV is downstairs. By re-setting the router you mean turn it off and then on again? I do have a surround sound on the TV but I tried disabling it and still no change. Thanks

By reseting the router, I believe he/she/they mean at least pressing and holding the reset switch on the back on the router.

As an example...

The WRT54G, back side looks like this

From left to right: One of the antennas, Reset Switch, WAN/Internet Port, 4 LAN ports, Power Supply connector, antenna connector (if you disconnect one of the antennas, what you will see).

I tried reset with no results. I have four TV's with a cable box, but only one of those has the DVR recorder box. The other TV's do not seem to effect the internet speed, just the one with the DVR recorder.

really does not make much sense..... but here is an easy test, to at least determine if it is the DVR or the TV that is causing the inerference..... unplug the power to the DVR.... turn on your TV and maybe watch a DVD or something... if the wireless is still slow, then it is for sure not the DVR

regardless if it is or not.... you can try changing the wireless channel on the router and see if that helps

To access the router type 192.168.1.1 in a browser window and hit enter... You will be prompted for a usename and a password.

The default login informtation for the router is
username : admin
password : password

Sometimes the Field Tech will access the router during installation, and change it to
username : admin
password : password1

If neither work, then you would have to reset the router with a paperclip or pen in the reset hole on the back of the router for 15 seconds, and it will revert to defaults of
username : admin
password : password

once in, click on Wireless at the top, and you should be able to change the channel for the wireless in the basic settings section.... I usually have the best luck with channel 10 or 11

I can not for the life of me, think of how or why the TV or DVR would cause an issue with the wireless.... but at least there is something else to try

Let us know how it goes.

I don't know if this would apply to your case..

Some TV's detect the ambient light level in your room (I think using IR) in order to dynamically adjust the picture. While I kind of doubt this would affect the wireless signal, interference is interference and I've seen weirder (my wireless connection used to drop whenever I used my microwave).

The most common TVs I've seen using this light detection has been Sharps.

You may want to look through your TV manual for a feature that sounds similar or flip through the picture settings. And disable it.

Does your TV have an RF remote? It could be that the remote uses IR when the TV is off but enables the RF from the TV when it is turned on. Just an idea. If that is the case the RF could be messing with the RF for the wireless. Try setting your router to use a different wireless channel other then Auto, or try the different channels to see if it improves. I have never heard of this, but there is always a first. Normally the RF is from the remote to the TV, but your situation is strange. The TV should not be emitting RF that would cause wireless issues. Wireless speakers?
