I upgrade to WPA and my WIFI is slower and keeps dropping on some devices. Do I need to upgrade the router too?

Hopefully you went to WPA2.
If your router is one of the very old ones that don't support WPA2 you can get a free upgrade to a newer model.
In general your speed should be faster with WPA2. With all but the oldest devices the support WPA2 in hardware, and sometimes use software to do WEP.

M1424WR doesn't say what version you have as Actiontec uses the same model number, but different revisions.
