I'm deciding between Comcast and Verizion FIOS. FIOS is the better deal, and I've had better success with Verizon in the past. Verizon offers a special modem for rent or sale. I'd prefer to buy my own elsewhere, but ...
What are the modem specifications required for FIOS service?
Can I only use the brand and model that Verizon sells (even if I buy it elsewhere)?
Can I use my current cable modem? I assume not, but I can't remember how service gets from the FIOS box on the side of the house to the cable box in my utility room - whether that's on a coax, Cat5, or other kind of cable.

You may use any consumer router (not modems) to achieve Fios service.
however the set up is straight forward. If new service they will install an ONT either inside your house or outside on your homes wall.
Once provisioned they will run a ethernet cable cat5e or cat6 from the ONT to your router. Once connected to your WAN port the tech will turn your router on and get a dns IP address after that is done you need only set up your Fios account and you are good to go. Verizon does not support owner owned routers.
There is also the matter if you are having Fios tv and you will need either the Quantum G1100 router ($150 at Verizon) or you can purchase the Verizon branded G1100 not the Frontier version for ($100) Or the MOCA adapter to get service to your tv. For guide purposes only. A good place to learn is here.

verizon does not do troubleshooting on non Verizon branded (Greenwave) routers.
Good Luck
