Verizon FIOS Internet "Contract"

I recently was foced to change FIOS internet service from 20/5 to 15/5 when I disconnected my TV Service.  Shortly after I talked to the rep, I got a confirmation email stating that I "requested" the change.  So far, it's o.k.  But in the email, it stated that I signed up for "contract" with early termination penalty.  Although I do not have plan to jump the FIOS since it appears that it is the fastest/reliable internet connection around here, that "contract" made me to think if this is one of verizon's dirty tactic to tie up customer.  If it is how the verizon does their business, I don't think I want to be their customer.

When I talked to rep for the change, he did not mention anything about the "contract".  I don't mind to have a year or two year contract as long as I was informed up-front but slapt with "hidden" contract doesn't make me feel good.

Am I the only one experience this bad practice?
