What do I do with an old verizon router after I replace it?

Verizon suggests calling {edited for privacy} for a prepaid label, but that number is always busy!  Should I just bring it into the store or do I own the thing?

Unless you bought it, you don't own it.  Most likely it came with the service and still belongs to Verizon, which means they may charge you for it later if it isn't returned.

You have 2 options:  keep calling and try to get a mailing label.  Or take it it a store.  In either case keep the receipt.  If you decide to take it to a store, call them first and ask if you will be charged to turn it in there.

Connect it to your in house network as a second wireless access point, see link

Ok here is the deal. Yes in many cases Verizon does want the router back. However there are some older model numbers that Verizon will no longer be using and therefor they do not require them to be sent back. Normally when Verizon sends out a replacement router they will include either: A. a return shipping label with instructions to ship it back. or B. a note that the model router you have is not required to be sent back. Examples of this are the models MI424WR Rev. A, MI424WR Rev. B, and MI424WR Rev. C. there may be other older routers that we no longer use. To my knowledge all models MI424WR rev. D and above need to be returned to verizon. Also just to add to this, some costomers actually do own their routers. An example of this is the MI424WR Rev. I can be purchased for like $100 dollars or something. When it is purchased and owned by the customer. However they may need to return it if we replace it with a new one under warranty replacement.

Thank you. You make sense and I appreciate the complete and thorough answer.

I will check the rev level.

It would be interesting if I could use this router as a second access point for both LANs and wireless access to the Internet.

That is, if this second router provided independant access to the Internet. But I suspect that such an approach would require a second account from Verizon.
