When Can I Keep My (Old) Router?

Does anyone know, definitively, under what circumstances can an existing FiOS subscriber keep their old Actiontec router when upgrading their service or purchasing a new router form Verizon?

I have been a FiOS subscriber for (3)+ years and still use the same Actiontec MI424WR rev. C router that was provided during the original install.

My FiOS bill lists a charge for the monthly Internet service I receive, but there is no separate rental fee listed for the router.

My understanding is if a rental fee is not listed for the router the customer may keep this device when it is replaced.

I'd like to set up a (2) router network within my home and I am interested in upgrading to Quantum TV.

Again, my understanding is if I replace my QIP7232-P2/QIP7100-P2 with a VMS1100/IPC1100 Verizon will provide an Actiontec MI424WR rev. I (wireless b/g/n) router for no additional charge. Does this mean I can keep the old rev. C router if I upgrade to Quantum TV?

Continueing on with this process, say I upgrade to Quantum TV and receive a wireless n router then decide to buy a Quantum Gateway G1100 router; will I also be able to keep the MI424WR rev. I router?

If I purchase a Quantum Gateway G1100 router from Verizon is it mine to keep should I discontinue my FiOS service?

Your help is appreciated. I'd like to know what my options are before deciding to pay more for Verizon FiOS.

Just because you don't pay a rental fee does not mean you get to keep the old router when it's replaced. Verizon still owns that router.

If it's a very old router the chances of them wanting it back is slim, however when you do upgrade they usually tell you if they want it back or there will be a return shipping label included with the new one. Some do receive a letter with the new routers saying they don't want the old routers back.

Be careful if you get a letter with the new router though because even though I was told they didn't want my old Westell back and to just toss it when I went to cancel service they said I had to give it back. If you don't get any kind of notice or return label the best thing to do is call them and ask if you have to give it back.

Even if you have to send back the old router you can easily purchase one on ebay very cheap and use it.

If you get a rev. i with quantum and later buy a gateway then you will have to send the rev. i back unless you flat out buy that one as well. I know they are still taking back the rev. i's.

The way to think of it is if you don't buy it from them they own it and is their property.

If you purchase a router then it is yours to keep even when service is terminated.

Thanks for your reply, but it still sounds as if sometimes a subscriber can keep his/her old router and sometimes they can't. Almost at the whim of the Verizon representative who is filling one's order.

I have received the same inconsistent responses from Verizon sales reps too. One says I can keep the old router the other says I can't. The Verizon TOS agreement isn't really clear regarding their equipment rental vs. ownership policies either.

What I don't understand if I upgrade to Quantum TV, Verizon will provide me with a wireless n router for no additional charge and if I have to return the wireless b/g router in the process then so be it.

But if I then purchase a Quantum G1100 router why would I have to return the Actiontec wireless n router?

I've asked Verizon for something in writing but of course they declined to do so.

Simple because you didn't purchase the rev. i. All equipment you receive from Verizon is property of them....unless you buy it. They are giving it to you to use with the service because it is the minimum requirement to be able to use quantum tv. Once you upgrade the rev. i and buy a gateway in their eyes the rev i. is no longer needed so they want back what belongs to them.

Thanks, I guess I'll have to buy a 3rd party router instead.

Do you know when Verizon might provide the G1100 to support Quantum TV instead of the Actiontec rev. I router?

Honestly you'd be better off using a 3rd party router. More options.

I'm sure Verizon will start giving the Gateway's out with quantum upgrades once the Actiontec's stock runs low which could be months to a year so no one will really know until it happens.

Are the Actiontec rev. I routers being supplied with Quantum TV upgrades new or refubrished equipment?

Are the Arris media servers & clients "always" new equipment provided with an initial upgrade to Quantum TV?

If I upgrade to Quantum TV now most likely I will be using whatever equipment I receive for a long time (e.g. I've had my original equipment: MI424WR rev. C, QIP7232-P2 and QIP7100-P2 for more then three years).

It depends on the market one lives in. Most people are still receving new Rev. i's and new VMS/client's, but there are some getting refurbished ones. Since the upgraded equipment ships out of their PA warehouse you'll most likely get new.

I know someone who just upgraded and both the router and VMS/client were new.

Thanks for your continueing help. One last question (hopefully):

My Actiontec rev. C router is connected to the Ethernet port on the ONT.

Can I replace the Actiontec rec. C router with a Linksys WRT1900AC and a Actiontec MoCA Network Adapter (e.g. ECB3500T) and still obtain MoCA IP services from Verizon (e.g. VOD and Program Guide)?

Let me throw in that you are likely eligible for a free upgrade to a newer model Actiontec router, possibly a Rev I.

See this link, and the top link on the page it brings up:

https://teleproducts.verizon.com/fios/index.cfm/eh/DisplayProducts

I ordered that free upgrade and was  charged $6 for shipping, but for the $6 they sent me a new Rev I router and didn't ask for the old router back.
