DVR Missing New Episodes

Just a programming heads-up to everyone. I've noticed a number of new episodes for several different shows being skipped by the DVR that should have been recorded. I've taken to checking the internet for new shows and premieres. If you like the BBC America show Primeval, it premieres tonight at 9:00 PM EDT - and the FIOS guide does not know it yet.

Welcome to the number 1 complaint about the FiOS DVR.  Failure to mark episodes as new, marking repeats as new, and just plain wrong information Smiley Sad

Yes I am looking harder at TIVO. Pause and rewind works. I can stop for popcorn. Or if I think I am going to miss the program because I am interupted, I can hit record. But depending on it. No way.

unfortunatly, tivo woulnt help you on this issue. the problem is that the guide data provided to verizon does not contain the programming flag to indicate the proper status of the show. A tivo connected to verizon would still pull the same info as the verizon dvr. this is not a hardware issue. its a problem with the guide data. Blame to be shared between Verizon and the program provider. Problem is that verizons guide "form" that is filled out and sent by the providers is not as standardized as some of the other companies so if the provider doesnt fill it in correctly the flag either doest appear or always appears. And on verizon's end, no one goes in and checks to verify the info is correct. And since tivo would contact the verizons guide data (just puts it in Tivo's format) it would still pull the incorrect data and give you the same issue.

This is completely wrong.

Cable providers deliver their guide in a proprietary format.  At this time, no one can use a cable company's guide data except for the cable company itself.   Verizon licenses guide data from FYI Television -- the cheapest and least reliable of the available guide data providers -- and delivers that information to their boxes using the data connection; no other boxes can use this guide information.  This is one of the reasons we don't have more cable STBs and DVRs at retail ---  CE vendors must provide the guide data themselves, and no source of free guide data exists for use by commercial products.

TiVo and Moxi license guide data from Tribune Media -- the best of the available guide data providers -- and delivers that information to every box using their own Internet servers.  Each night (or morning), the TiVo connects to those servers and downloads 14 days of program information using your choice of wired ethernet, wireless ethernet, or a phone line.

It is possible you read something about true2way and were confused by that; true2way boxes will use the cable company's guide information.  True2way devices use the same CableCards as the TivoHD and Moxi, but they also incorporate a bidirectional hardware receiver and a Java virtual machine.  True2way devices download and run a Java version of the cable company's STB/DVR software; this allows them to offer the cable company's own interface, program guide (including guide information), and VOD.  Next year, users should be able to purchase true2way DVRs for $300-$400 with greater capacities and support for external storage.  Unfortunately, Verizon FiOS has no plans to support true2way, so discussion of those products is academic.

It is too late to edit that post, so I want to clarify that comment.

Verizon wanted the true2way spec modified to permit guide data delivery and VOD over the data connection (which is what FiOS does with MoCA).  But CableLabs had no interest in making changes to support FiOS.  Since that specification does not support VOD or guide data delivery over IP, Verizon can't support it with their system.

After it became obvious that true2way would not be modified to support IP delivery, Verizon threw its support behind another standard -- VueKey.  More information can be found in this article.

actually I got my info directly from TIVO. I had a tivo and tried to take to to 3 differerent companies and I complained to TIVO about the the guide data being so completly wrong with verizon and what I posted was exactly what they told me. they said that they pulled the information from the cable provider and that I needed to address my complaint to them. They have told me this on several occasions as I was having a similar problem as listed above where it was constantly missing new episodes. So if its wrong I do appologize but that was the info I got from TIVO

It sounds like the rep was either confused or misunderstood your question.

Tribune Media obtains the channel lineup and channel lineup numbers from Verizon.  But the program information on the channels does not come from Verizon.
