I am very happy to find so many post on this topic.  I am personally insulted to have to view the Nats on standard definition just because an Oriole's game is played at the same time.  Verizon should carry MASN 2 HD, and there should be a way to get them to do it.  From some of the posts, it sounds like it is in the works, but I have had no luck in finding anyone to talk to about it at Verizon.

Any ideas for a public campaign to force Verizon to satisfy it's customers?  Maybe texting?

The Orioles don't get preference and you know it. Next week the Orioles fans will be complaining when their team is on MASN2 HD. When Verizon finally carries both channels in HD, it won't matter.

The Orioles don't get preference?  How do they decide?

I always print out the schedules before the season starts, and every year they give each team an equal amount of games on the main channel. Sometimes a game is taken away by Fox on a Saturday at the end of the season, which can take away one or two. It looks like they decide which team gets on the main channel though by who they are playing. The Yankees, Red Sox, Cubs, And Phillies always seem to get preference. The Mets usually get on the main channel too, but in July I see they are bumped to MASN2 in favor of the Red Sox. I guess the idea is that Nationals and Orioles fans will be watching anyway. There are lots of fans of those opposing teams in our region, and they seem to want those "casual" fans to find their games and watch them, along with the commercials, especially in bars and restaurants where the main channel is more likely to be on. Smiley Wink

Like I said though, it won't matter in a couple weeks when we finally get MASN2 HD. I've just noticed these patterns over the last three years of watching almost every Nationals game.

Thanks.  That makes me less irked and more looking forward to MASN2 HD.

I find it hard to believe that Verizon FiOS has as bandwidth problem that prevents them from carrying MASN2HD.  The bandwidth on optical is orders of magnitude higher than that on copper, and Comcast and Cox still send out their signals on copper, along with both MASNHD and MASN2HD.

Were I not under service contract I would drop Verizon now for Comcast despite Concast's severe customer service problems.  It is inexcusable for any Washington area carrier not to carry MASN2HD now.  If they need bandwidth, well, they carry so many shopping channels in HD now that it's genuinely absurd -- who on this earth needs to see washed-up celebrities hawking overpriced chachkis in a resolution that lets us see every crease and liver spot on their dessicated faces?  It puts me off my food!

It was less of an issue early in the season because nearly all Nationals' games were being carried on MASNHD, and many of those that weren't were being played on the west coast and "bonus" carried on MASNHD starting some time in the first inning or so after the Orioles lost already.  Many of the rest were Sunday games simulcast on WDCW in HD on Verizon channel 503 (like both tomorrow's and next Sunday's games).  It is only in the past three weeks or so that Peter Angelos seems to have started using MASN for Orioles games and MASN2 for Nationals games as a general rule, but now it has become a REAL issue because it seems to be EVERY SINGLE GAME.

Compounding the problem is that the picture quality on channel 1 seems to be SSD -- SUB-Standard Definition.  You can barely make out the names on the players' backs or recognize their faces at bat or in the field.\

I want to see more articles in the mainstream press and on the Nats' website about this.  Verizon needs to be pressured.

It sounds like you'll believe what you want to about the way the games are shown on the two channels, but please read my post above for a more logical approach.

It stinks that Verizon has painted themselves into a corner with regard to adding HD channels, but the big difference between them and the cable complanies is that they put 2 HD channels per QAM, where cable will do 3. Because of the current crunch, Verizon will most likely make a few channels 3 per QAM to open up some room until they can start sending out channels over IP like they do for on demand. You may also know that they are getting rid of four HD west coast movie channels in a little over a week which will immediately open up two QAM's.

In any case, Verizon IS being pressured, and as other posts above have confirmed, MASN2 HD will be on in a matter of weeks. In the meantime, most of the Nationals games in the next couple weeks are on MASN HD.
