One of the PR guys for Verizon addressed this on is blog: http://policyblog.verizon.com/PolicyBlog/Blogs/policyblog/EricRabe9/531/September-Times-Three.aspx#c...)

Verizon is "working on it" but I wouldn't expect to see if this season.  Maybe we'll have it for the 2009-2010 season.   The key (to me) will be to see whether MLB Extra Innings shows up this spring.  If so, I'd bet they'll have some of these other sports packages.  Unfortunately for Verizon the cable companies own the NHL, MLB and NBA PPV packages.  They are unwilling to do anything to aid a phone company like Verizon that eats away at their subscriber base.  They can't flat out ban Verizon from getting it, but they can make them pay a steep premium for it.  That's likely the reason for the delay.  One positive is that the larger Verizon gets, the fewer potential subscribers these packages have and the more incentive the cable companies have to do a deal with Verizon.

Here's the PR guy's specific response on his blog:

Rusell and Mike,

We continue to work to acquire this and other programming, but we don’t announce the details of business negotiations or agreements until they are final and until it’s appropriate. I’m sure you can understand why a business simply cannot negotiate for programming on the blogs. That said, however, we continue to work for new programming all the time, and we are well aware that there are hockey fans out there like you who would enjoy the NHL Network and NHL Center Ice.

My problem with Verizon is that their sales reps promised this and that last year when they were going around doing a mass sign up.   I was told that it would be here in the 2008-2009 season.  Well it looks like this ain't going to happen.  Funny that I just got an flyer from Comcast showing what was available and the NHL Network is one of them.  If more people consider switching back to Comcast, this might more Verizon a little faster.  I am seriously considering going back to Comcast just for the hockey coverage.  Bundle that with the internet and home phone, you might be making out

I agree. I was told that the Nhl Network and Center ice were going to be available this season when I signed up. I still have all of my direct v tivo equiptment in the basement. It wouldn't take much to hook it back up. Besides the Tivo is light years better than the  {please keep your posts courteous} Verizon DVR. Is there a fee if you pull out before your year or two is up?

I want the NHL Network......but asking for both this and the NHL Center Ice is to much. For hockey coverage I'd love to still have comcast....but not at their price and poor service.

Well, it looks like Verizon will not get my business until April 2009 at the earliest. Center Ice and the NHL Network are deal breakers for me. Being a Los Angeles Kings fan, I do  need to see other teams to see what good hockey looks like, and without these packages I can not jusitfy to myself being stuck with VS, NBC, and Fox Sports West as my only hockey outlets.

Time Warner should be deploying SDV to my area sometime during the hockey season, which I will have to consider once Verizon gets Center Ice.

The only thing that will make me switch sooner is if the quality of my HD on TWC gets worse.

Carl I feel for you having the Kings there.......you can get NHL Center Ice through NHL.com to view over the internet.......I wish these guys would stop playing around and give hockey fans the same as they do for fans of other sports.

Looks like Verizon will carry neither NHL Network or center Ice...they did say to me when I signed up that center ice was coming.......but my big thing was getting CSN in Philly better service for a cheaper price then cable.

But its been hard not having Center Ice which looks like a second season. I had it 5 years running before lov ed watching all the games and what I couldn't watch I let the DVR record and I got them a day or so later.

Good luck with the Kings hopefully Hexy will help you guys build a great team.....with Lomby.  🙂

They probably won't give you an answer here......if they do it will be to call you local office. As for me calling my local office they know even less about it then what I can find out here and around the internet.
