Verizon To Drop Their Guide Provider!

I told you! I mentioned on here when i spoke about the bein sports channels that verizon was looking into changing guide providers because they were tired of all of the trouble tickets that were being created about all of the outdated inaccurate guide data that was on the guide and now it is set to happen. Verizon is set to drop their guide provider fyi television where the move is going to happen this fall and no later than this winter. So somewhere between september - december the switch will occur where you will see a significant change in the information that will appear on the fios guide. Now who the company will be that verizon will be switching to has not been revealed but i am hearing although it has not been confirmed yet that it will be tribune media services which is the best provider of guide data in the country. Tribune media is responsible for the guide data of directv, dish network, cablevision, comcast, cox cable, time warner, zap 2 it and tivo. Fyi television has been informed of the decision that verizon is going to drop them where i confirmed this with people at verizon but also with people at fyi television who are pretty angry about the decision to drop them. Now fyi television will only have at&t uverse as their only major client where they have some smaller clients too. Now i am not sure if at&t will also be dropping fyi television too but if they are then then fyi television will probably cease to exist a year from now if they are unable to attract any new clients. Now this guide issue has been verizon's biggest issue for years where a lot of customers have dropped them over this issue or are about to drop them over this issue where i am passing this information on that only a select few people have. So for those who are currently in a contract with verizon and are contemplating dropping them over this problem the change is just a few months away. Now i have been all over this issue for a while now and know my level of involvement in trying to facilitate this move and from what i understand fyi television is so angry about this move that if there is any bad guide data on the guide from now until the day that the switch is made they are not going to do a single thing about it. This move will help verizon attract customers since word had spread that verizon was to be avoided because the guide data was almost always wrong and not up to date. For those who are curious verizon is currently the number 5 provider of tv in the country with 5 million customers where comcast is number 1 with 22 million followed by directv who is number 2 with 20 million then dish with 14 million then at number 4 is time warner with 12 million. Once word gets out about this move people who dropped fios for another tv provider because of this issue will come back and it will also attract new customers too since they had heard about this being a big problem for fios customers. A very big move by verizon. A very, very big move. I will in another thread be revealing some channel addtions that verizon is set to debut later this fall where espn deportes hd and univision deportes in hd are a couple of the channels that are going to be added. This fall verizon will be releasing their six tuner dvr so there are major changes on the way for fios tv customers with channel additions, a new dvr and a guide provider switch on the way.

Well, I'm glad this finally happened for you. God knows you've spent hours documenting it. Myself, I've never had an issue with the FiOS guide data. It's always been pretty accurate and up-to-date for the channels I watch consistently. The new provider better be as good for my channels or I'm taking up the complaint mantle from you. The best news of that entire post is hearing that there is a six-tuner DVR coming.  I've been waiting for that for 4 years.

Verizon rarely does anything on time though, so I won't get my hopes up until I actually see it released.

I have rarely had any problems with the guide data so I would hardly say it's "always wrong".

First, many, many thanks (and kudos) to Armond for reformatting the original post of this thread so I can actually read it without getting a severe headache!

I certainly think that a change in the Guide data provider will be a great step forward, the constant errors have been a major irritant for years. The sooner this change occurs the better, I think any provider will be better than FYI.

Regarding the item at the end of the post about a six tuner DVR coming from Verizon, this should really not be new news to anybody who has paid any attention to threads here on the Forums. Prisaz and I attended the C.E.S. 2013 convention in Las Vegas in January 2013, where Verizon demonstrated the new VMS client/server system with six tuners and a 1 TB hard drive. For those of you who have missed this information, here is a link to a thread prisaz created that describes what we saw:

http://forums.verizon.com/t5/FiOS-TV-Programming/CES-2013-and-items-that-will-change-the-way-you-enj...

The above link also contains links to many other articles on the new system.

Justin, lets just hope VZ sticks to the plan for the 6 tuner roll out.  It is so desperately needed.

I'm happy to see verizon switching to the same company that tivo uses for their guide (tribune). I had a few problems with my tivo guide a few months back when verizon switched to the pacific feed for TNT my guide data was 3 hours time difference,It took tivo a week to get the correct time because verizon had the wrong info from thie guide data company ,which i guess was FYI. So with verizon and tivo both using the same company it should make a much smooter operation,Good move verizon!!Smiley Happy
