Well that had to suck, right?

So it would zoom in when the picture was letterboxed? Does your TV have an aspect (mode, ratio, whatever) button on its remote? Does the "Aspect" (#) button on the Verizon remote do anything for ya? How about if you hit TV then Aspect?

and i didn't have to update my tv settings it was the settings on the cable box..

 You sure on that one?

they say fios is much better well????

 Well?!?!

Fios is what.. 4 years old at this point (in production)? Maybe 5 years?
I guess that's old.. sorry, can't answer that one.

someone please help me..

This has already been discussed many time on this forum.  Here is just one of the posts that I found:

http://forums.verizon.com/t5/FiOS-TV-Technical-Assistance/Older-4-3-HDTV-with-Fios/m-p/18844#M8574

Note that if the Channel Provider is generating the side bars (Such asI have seen on ESPN and a feew others) then you will not be able to change anything.  In this case the provider is providing the network (FIOS) with a 1080I Signal which the box and your TV will process as HD, icluding the bars.
