CableCard HD video dropouts

Message 1 of 6

I just switched from HD STBs to CCs, and I'm seeing video dropouts that never happened with the STBs. They seem to happen more often during commercials, except for a few channels (MGMHD, HDNET Movies) that seem to do it constantly. This is the same sort of dropouts other have described on the forum with the HD STBs: video and audio drop out completely for 1-2 sec, then return. The tech measured my signal strength during install and said it was "exactly where they want it." (Don't remember the exact level.)

I am using HDMI 🙂 but it sounded like that issue is specific to the Motorola STBs. Anybody seen this with CCs and if so, any suggestions?

Thanks,

Andy

you should be able to test the signal strength on your device that has the cable card, the tech might have said the signal is where it's supposed to be, but someone sometime said that the numbers on the tower in pisa were all good to go and that bad boy sunk into the ground.

I agree with both Bob and Donald. It could be your device, the cable card seating, or the Cable Cards just need to be hit again. IE:Reloaded with your subscriptions. What devices are you using the cards in? That may make a difference. Tivo had a software update that fixed some problems from version 9.x to version 11.x. On the older software to strong a signal could cause pixelation and drop outs and required signal attenuators. Even new boxes from Tivo have shipped with the the old software, and will load the new software after a period of time. Or on the next restart after the box has connected to tivo for a while. It all depends on what device you are using. I have  M-Cards with no HD issues.

You haven't indicated what CableCard device you have.   TiVo released a software update (11.0d) to eliminate signal compatibility issues with FiOS, but a number of other CableCard devices did not receive such a compatibility update.

You should also be aware that Verizon inserts SD (480i) commercials into HD (720p, 1080i) programs.  Your TV may exhibit a brief blackout or video loss as it syncs between the resolution of the HD program and the SD commercial.  To address this, set your CableCard device to "fixed 1080i" or "fixed 720p" output rather than native.

If you are the original poster (OP) and your issue is solved, please remember to click the "Solution?" button so that others can more easily find it.

What I have found is that you can set a TIVO HD device to Hybrid, it will take the 480i and convert it. But all other formats come out in Native. If you like the feature of Native passthough, this will fix the 480i issue. My older Samsung does not like 480i and this works well.
