I can set it from the guide by pressing Guide button when the guide is open. It seems to keep it for a while, but then drops the filter. I looked under Settings but couldn't find an option to preserve it. Thanks.
After setting it up the way you want try going here and toggling the option off, then back on and then reboot the box.
Main Menu > Guide > Settings > Last Viewed Guide State
