Duplicate recordings

On the DVR I get multiple recordings of the same episode of the same show.  For example, for The Daily Show, I will see at least 2 recordings of today's episode.  The description of each episode is specific to that day's episode, say listing a guest that will appear on the show.  But for some reason it will be recorded at least twice.  This doesn't seem to happen to ALL shows, but it happens enough that I've reduced the number of episodes per series that will be retained before they are automatically deleted.

Any ideas?

You must either have your series settings on Any Time or Every Channel. Make sure it says Only This Channel and Only This Time.

I'll check that setting.  But my intention would be to record each episode, and it doesn't matter to me what channel or time it appears.  I wouldn't want to constrain it to only one channel or time since there might be conflict.

In any event, why would I want multiple copies of the same show?

This is a problem with several Comedy Central shows.

A few shows like The Daily Show, The Colbert Report, and Big Brother don't always provide good guide data for their re-runs.  At certain points during the year, they use a generic description on these re-runs. Without good guide data, a series recording can't determine whether these are new or repeats, so it "plays it safe" and records them all.

To get around this on the Verizon DVR, set your series recording to "only record at this time."

For those that have a TiVo, there is a more elegant solution:

  1. Create a new WishList under Find Programs -> Wishlists.
  2. Enter the show title as a single Title Keyword (ex: Daily Show with Jon Stewart)
  3. Enter the generic program description as a single Keyword (ex: A humorous slant on top news stories).
  4. Select this keyword and press thumbs up/down to mark it with a minus sign (ex: -A humorous slant on top news stories).
  5. Set the WishList to Auto Record with "First run only".

This will record all new episodes -- at whatever time that doesn't conflict with your favorite shows -- and ignore the repeat episodes with generic guide data. Examples:

Colbert Report
Title Keyword: Colbert Report
Keyword: -Discuss current issues

Daily Show with Jon Stewart
Title Keyword: Daily Show with Jon Stewart
Keyword: -A humorous slant on top news stories

In DVR Settings...  Check to see if you have Record Duplicates set to "No".  Yours maybe set to "Yes".

I checked the settings:

Duplicates: NO

Channel: selected channel

Time: Anytime

The 2 recorded episodes of the Daily Show have the SAME description but it is NOT the generic description.  So I don't think our theories are explaining this behavior 😞

The behavior you and I experience is bazaar at best.  I'm used to how Comcast did it.  I can't figure out what FiOS is trying to do and not sure they know either since I can't get a straight answer on just about any issue I have.
