FiOS TV and Internet: Can two routers be used in same house?

Hi everyone,

My situation is similar to this post:  http://forums.verizon.com/t5/FiOS-Internet/Verizon-FIOS-Internet-Two-routers-or-data-jacks-in-same-h...

I didn't feel that the question regarding two separate routers was answered.

I currently have FIOS internet service. I have an ethernet cable running about 25 feet from the outside box to my D-Link router on the third floor of my house. I want to get FIOS TV in my basement, very close to where the FIOS cables and backup system are located. The Verizon tech explained that all access for internet or tv would have to come from one router using coax cable. Is this correct? Why can't I continue to use the ethernet connection to my D-Link router for internet access, then split the wire in the basement and run it to the new router that will connect to the STB and TV?

My house is very old and running new cable from the computer room to the basement would be difficult. I will do this if I have no other option. I am not really interested in a wireless solution.

Thanks.

Thanks for the response. The current ethernet cable from the ONT runs to my third floor computer room. There is no coax jack on the 3rd floor. The only place in the entire house that has any coax is the corner of the basement where the tv is - as far away as possible from my current router.

However, the ONT is close to the tv. I would like to split the ethernet cable where it currently connects to the ONT, and keep the current line going to the computer room. I would like to drill through the foundation and run the second line into the basement and connect it to the new verizon router. Then run coax from the new router to the TV only a few feet away. Is this technically possible?

The link you provided seems to indicate that two separate, unconnected routers may work - contrary to what the verizon tech told me.

Multiple Routers can work just fine if they are configured correctly.  I would set it up as follows to keep your Verizon Router as Primary, which they (Verizon) should fully support:

Preparation Steps:

  • Release the FIOS Internet DHCP Address that is assigned to the D-Link and Unplug the CAT5 cable from the WAN Port on the D-Link Router.
    • From a PC connected to the DLink, configure your DLink with a fixed address of 192.168.1.2, turn off the DHCP Server, and any routing features.  You are essentially turning this into a switch.  You configure it with this address to prevent a conflict with the Verizon Router.

If you hook it up like this then Verizon should provide support for their router and any set top issues you may have:

  • ONT ----Coax----2 Way Splitter----Verizon Router and STB
  • ONT----CAT5----Verizon Router WAN Port (For Data)
  • Verizon Router Lan Port 1----Existing CAT5 Cable to 3rd Floor----Lan Port 1 of DLink

Post Installation Steps:

  • Logon to the Verizon Router and change the DHCP Scope to start at 192.168.1.3

Your existing PCs would use the remaining ports on the D-Link and would obtain their DHCP Information from the Verizon Router which would also handle all firewall and routing functions.  The Verizon Router will use the 100 to 150 TCP/IP Range for the STBs.

This will leave you with the 3rd Option in this FAQ (http://www.dslreports.com/FAQ/verizonfios/3.0_Networking).  Since you already have a CAT5 Data Connection you will also have the flexibility to make your router primary if necessary in the future.

Can the Ethernet Cable from the ONT be run into the Basement ?

Is there a Coax Jack near the D-Link Router on the 3rd Floor ?

You will need a Verizon Supplied Router connected to an Active Coax Jack in the house (Does NOT have to be in the basement).  The Verizon STBs get their Guiode Data and VOD Content via the Internet over the MOCA Network that the Verizon Router will handle.  If you have a Coax jack near the D-Link router it can be located there, which will make it easy to setup and combine with your network.

If you have a Coax Jack near your computer you may be able to swith to it and not need the D-Link.  Or you can use the D-Link in combination with the Verizon Router.  Here is a FAQ with more details:
