Is there a way to record to flash drive with a set top box with no dvr?

The only way to record is to use a device that records the straight video/audio.
Either from one of the outputs or from the firewire port (if your box is so equipped).

Ok. Is there a way to buy the firewire and use a firewire to usb connection? Which connector do I need to buy?

The Firewire (IEEE 1394) interface is a serial bus interface standard for high-speed communications and isochronous real-time data transfer. Some computers have it and some do not. Since it is an interface, you would still need software running on the computer to record the data. See this this link for further information on what you would need. It's not as trivial as pluggin in a connnector.
