From DVR to DVD?

My DVR is filling up quickly with HD shows and movies.  It fills up during the week before I can catch up with weekend viewing.  How can I move recorded programs to DVDs to free up space on the DVR?

I recently moved over from a satellite provider.  My Tivo had an option to copy recordings to VCR/DVD.  Is this not possible with Verizon's DVR?

Nope, I wish it was. the 160gb hdd kills me too. They are working on the driver and DRM to get the USB, Firewire, and esata ports working for a external drive, but there is no ETA on that yet.

Simply substitute a DVD recorder for the TV connected to your DVR-STB (or a remote STB if you have the multi-room capability); then connect the DVD recorder outputs to the TV inputs.

Works for me.

Is there no extra S-VHS or composite output from the STB?  That's what I use to record DVD's from my Comcast STB's.  Of course, when you're doing this, you cannot watch any other channels from the STB.  That's when I swirch over to the analog Comcast CABLE signal.

That would work, but if your putting it on DVD why not record on SD then, your not going to get HD on that DVD. You will save space on the DVR, and not waste money on DVDs? unless your just building a catalog of TV shows on DVD.

"not waste money on DVDs? unless your just building a catalog of TV shows on DVD."

Depending on the DVD recorder, you can use REWRITABLE DVD-RW's or DVD-RAM.  That's what I did before the days of STB DVR's.  I still do this on the STB w/o a DVR.

Thanks to everyone for this helpful info.  Can you recommend a DVD recorder that will not have problems with copyright restrictions?  I've heard most Sony's won't record from tv.

I have an old Sony DVD-R/RW and three year old or so Panasonic DVD-RAM recorders.  Both record off the S-VHS/composite video outs - LIVE TV or DVR - of a Comcast STB just fine.  If you're looking for a Blu-Ray DVD recorder, don't hold your breath.  They are available, but not in the US at this time.

Here's site that explains why:

HDMI Input DVD Recorders (or lack thereof)
