Did you connect the 6416 to the screen using HDMI or component? In settings, did you set your TV as 16:9?

Double-check to confirm your DVR is set to 16:9 and 1080i output (not 480i or 480p).
- Press the POWER button to turn the DVR off. Be prepared to quickly press the next 2 buttons.
- Immediately press and release the OK button on the remote (or the Select button on the front of the DVR)
- Immediately press and release the Menu button on the remote or the front of the DVR.
- If your current aspect ratio does not display (16:9, 4:3L, or 4:3P) you may have waited too long between button presses. Turn the DVR on and try again.
- Set TV Type to 16:9 and HDMI/YPrPb output to 1080i. Set 4:3 override to off.

You might try a different channel component input on your TV, just in case the former owner enabled some sort of squeeze mode.
I assume you are actually tuned to a HD channel. On FiOS, all HD channels start at 500. Everything under 500 is SD.
Most local channels don't broadcast actual HD until 7-8pm, with exception to a few select daytime shows and soaps.

spacedebris is right! Try that.
At my house I wasted a lot of time trying to over-fix the problem using the STB custom settings when all I needed to do was select a more appropriate zoom setting (also sometimes called “ratio” or “aspect” on some TV’s).
You will notice however depending on the shape the TV station is broadcasting you may still have black bars on top and bottom (usually a WIDE screen movie) or black bars on the sides (usually a commercial or older program).
I simply adjust my TV’s zoom settings depending on what’s on. On my TV there is one TV zoom setting that always fills the entire screen, but if I use it all the time the sides of wide screen broadcasts, and the top & bottom of the older square style get cropped.
Some changing of the TV’s zoom may be in our future for years as there are many screen shapes being sent to our homes, and no industry standard shape mandated that I am aware of.
