I saw similar posts but not one specific to my situation. I bought a new monitor for my computer, so I would like to "recycle" my existing LCD monitor by hooking it up to my standard STB in the bedroom where I have an old TV that's showing signs of dying.
My monitor has VGA, DVI, and a USB connection. I have computer speakers with a standard audio jack. What is the best recommendation for hooking up the monitor and speakers to the STB? Also, are there any settings on the STB that I have to make? Thanks!

sounds like your monitor does not have the needed connections. Most monitors dont.
you would have to have some type of video input available on the monitor to connect a STB to it. The STB's simply are not desiged to connect to computer systems.
Most of the people who are connecting to their monitors are doing via a video capture card on the computer. (or something similar).
So what you need is either a way to connect a video signal to either your computer or monitor. Most computer do not contain this ability from the manufacturer. Most of the time it will require modification from the aftermarket. There are lots of people here that will likely be able to tell you how.

spacedebris, Thanks for your response, but i want to clarify i am only trying to hook up the monitor (and speakers) to the STB. Not trying to hook up the STB to a computer.

Then, no. As far as I know, you cannot connect a STB to a monitor as the monitor does not have the proper connections. And the STB has no provision for connecting the speakers (no headphone jack)

There is a HDMI to DVI connector you could try. I used to have to use them at work to hook TV's to PC's that didn't have HDMI ports.

Thanks Tsauter, but the standard STB doesn't have a HDMI or DVI output.

With the SD STB, you are out of luck. There are only 3 outputs available from these boxes,
The 3 outputs from the SD box are :
3.58 NTSC RF on channel 3 or 4
NTSC 3.58 Composite Video
NTSC S-Video
Unfortunately none of those outputs even vaguely resemble the component video your display is looking for.
So somewhere there needs to be a conversion from one the available NTSC formats to component video.
The available choices are a video card for your computer and HD-DVR or HD-VCR's that can accept the NTSC input and provide component video output for the LCD. Those are likely to cost more than your display is worth.

OK, I found the following product:
http://sewelldirect.com/KGuard-TVBox-1440LCD-TV-Adapter.asp
Does this seem like it would work?

Sure does. It has all the inbound connection options of the STB and the outbound DVI and 3.5mm stereo plug for the monitor.
