I'm very dissatified with this system. In addition to the same problems I see others mentioning about the secondary rooms, ie blackouts, pixilation, fast forward issues-- the main system is driving me nuts.
I'm frequently finding shows that only the first 4 minutes are recorded. Hour long shows are only recorded for 59 minutes and some seconds so last punchlines are lost. Some shows start recording 30 minutes in. Some shows start recording 5- 15 minutes early so I lose the ending.
I would call with the problem, but my last two calls took forever and yeilded little or nothing.
Can I just go to an electronics shop and buy better DVRs to hook into this system????

What exactly is a cable card?
A CableCard is a credit-card sized access card. It plugs into a CableCard slot to authorize all of the channels that you pay for. Your device must have a CableCard slot to use it.
Devices with CableCard slots include the Moxi and TivoHD. Some TVs also have CableCard slots.

Yeah you can go Tivo, Moxi, or the other option depending on what you want to record is to look into Windows 7 Media Center.
I personally went with Tivo HDs and a Windows 7 based DVR. Now if only Verizon would offer more unencrypted clearqam channels or some way to descramble channels at the ONT or router. I don't need another box on every TV.
